I also had extremely low vitamin D levels.  I supplement with drops added to a beverage or a bite of food (it's tasteless and recommended by the RD at my surgeon's office).  Each drop has 1,000 IUs, so I take 3,000 IUs a day.  I use Carlson Lab Ddrops, which I order from a local health food store, but they can be purcahsed directly online from the company.  Each bottle has 365 drops.   It was amazing to learn how many problems can be caused by a vit D deficiency; my insomnia has improved (it's not good but it's better than it was) since my levels have risen.

I take vitamin D in drops--every drop has 1,000 IUs.  I sprinkle three tiny drops (so a total of 3,000 IUs) in a beverage or bite of food (it's tasteless).  I use Carslon Ddrops, a bottle has 365 drops, which I order from a local health food store, but it can be ordered on line directly from the company.  Very easy way to take vitamin D and my numbers have really improved.  I never knew that vit D deficiency can cause so many problems, including insomnia.
