This is a question for the Breastfeeding moms -- Are there any foods your baby doesn't like?  David tummy hurt after I ate beans earlier this week (oops -- I should've known better), and then yesterday after potato salad that had apple cider vinegar (yummy for me). What foods do you have to avoid? Cindy

My bible study class made us Lasanga w/ garlic bread the first week we were home from the hospital.  It was very good, but the garlic made Hannah miserable.   My milk even reeked of garlic!  She had acid reflux and for a few days I ate nothing but peanut butter crackers trying to figure out what made the reflux worse.   I never could pin point any foods that triggered the reflux.   After that I tried to stay away from anything that made me gassy.  I figured if it hurt my tummy it would hurt hers.

Hi,

I couldn't eat broccoli for the entire year I nursed my daughter.  If I forgot it made her incredibly fussy and she would vomit.  The funny thing is that broccoli is one of her favorite veggies. No food troubles when I nursed my son.

Dredging back the years, its similar to the previous gals' postings: garlic, cabbage, beans, sometimes full fat milk.

Anything that is known to be a gas producer, most very young children will get it through the breast milk, and their immature systems will have a problem handling digesting what is going through the milk. Its a drag, but unfortunately true. :c( If you have any at all you may have to have very small amounts, or tend to skip it for a while.

SIde note: My SIL gave my 1 year old nephew about a tablespoon full of beans (pinto I think it might have been) a few weeks ago. Dominic LOVED them--- but his digestive tract, not so much! The poor baby had explosive diarhea to the point where it was up his back into his hair, flowing down his legs, etc. etc. He was sitting in an exersaucer at the time... so.. wow. Yeah. It does really take their systems a while to aclimate to certain foods!

I avoided nothing at first but then eliminated several foods when I realized he reacted to them consistenly--beans (I tried Beano--helped me but not him), apple cider vinegar (lots of German potato salad), and all dairy and soy.  I continued to eat broccoli, garlic, onions, tomatoes, etc. without any problems.
