Help! Hannah is biting herself!

When Hannah doesn't get her way she bites herself.  Enough so that she has broken her skin.   Anyone experienced this?    I'm just not for sure how to handle this.  Telling her no isn't working.   When she is rough with me or an animal I tell her to pet Mommy or the animal.  I've tried telling her no biting, pet Hannah.  She will pet herself, but then the next time something doesn't go exactly her way she bites herself again.
Any suggestions?   I'm taking her to the doc this evening to get her ears checked.  Hopefully I can remember to ask what he suggests.
I'm glad she isn't biting me or anyone else, but I dont' want her biting herself either!
Thanks,
Amy

Sadie did this for a short period too.   Any time she got frustrated because she didn't get her way she would bite her hand.   We tried not to make a real big deal out of it but told her don't bite that hurts.   It didn't last real long partly because it hurt too much and partly I think because it didn't get a big reaction out of us like she thought.    Good luck!   Hopefully it's short lived.

I'm glad it was short lived for Sadie!  I have visions of Hannah being a senior in college biting herself lol.  Her arms looks terrible.  Luckily, anyone with any common sense can tell it is her own teeth marks.  I'm always afraid that I will get blamed for her bruises.

I agree with not making it a big deal. Once she realizes you aren't going to give her attention because of it, or give her, her way because of it....she will stop.

Apparently, when I was a toddler, I would hold my breath till I passed Ipassed out. It would freak my mom out and she would coddle me afterwards. she told me the doc told her to ignore me. that it wasn't going to hurt me. She said I did it about 2 more times and never again. Geesh I was a brat! LOL

When life hands you lemons, ask for tequila & salt and give me a call!

Hmmm Jo you're a brat too, huh??!  LOL   Mom always called me a brat because I was one to hold my breath and cried until I turned blue just so I could get my way. I just wi**** worked that well now...  ;)

I say ignore it and not make a big deal out of it... in fact I would even go as far as walking away from her or turning my head from her to let her know that you're not going to react.

Syd's not a biter (yet) thankfully.  She is a headbanger though.  She gets mad or frustrated from not getting her way, she will go and bang her head off whatever.  The wall, the floor, your body...etc.  Not too hard... but she is definitely trying to get her point across that she is ticked off.

Good Luck

I have no idea, Logan and Andrew just bite each other!  We tell them no and tell them to be nice.

My son Bryce did the same thing! Kind of like an "i'll show you" and he would bite himself and then cry about it. He got over it within a few months, but he sure did have some bite marks up and down his arm until then.
He started biting me until he got his way afterwards, but a little nip back got him to quit that as well :)

I agree w/all the others...she'll outgrow it if you ignore her when she does it.  Later, after she's forgotten about why she was mad, just make sure you clean up the bite so it doesn't get infected.

My older sister (who's now 42) used to bang her head when she didn't get her way.  My mom said the last time my sister did that, they were going into the grocery store and my sister was mad about something and threw herself on the ground, banging her head on the sidewalk.  She still has a scar on her forehead from it...but she never did it again.
