Hey thanks bariatric office!
Not.
So when I found out I was pg, I called my bariatric office to let them know and figure out what to do. Well I hadn't heard anything since last week and I get a letter in the mail today saying they know I am pg, if my OB has any questions to call as well as a handy list of what I should be taking for vits (which I already was doing).
Except she also added an article from the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing Oct-Dec 2004 titled Pregnancy Following Bariatric Surgery. She enclosed it because they use it as a reference and if my OB didn't have bariatric surgery experience he could read it too.
So I read it. It started out innocently enough - talking about the types of surgeries, types of deficiencies that are common after surgeries and of course implications of pregnancy specific to wls. And they mentioned a case study about a 18 month post op women who had a gangrenous herniated small bowel that resulted in the baby, and her death.
Yeeeeaaaahhhhh, just what I wanted to read about. I have specifically avoided the pregnancy books so far that I heard can scare pg women because of all the potential problems and complications. Sure it can happen. But right now I am just hoping I don't have a miscarriage and can be as healthy as possible. To be honest, although I was concerned about hernia's and bowel obstructions awhile after surgery they hadn't crossed my mind since.
Maybe it's the hormones, but it just pissed me off. Why would I (not in the medical field) care to read an article like that? Second, give me the title to pass on and I am sure my OB can get it (if he hasn't seen it already since it is 5 years old). Sure, I know it can happen. A LOT of things can happen and it did also say most women were fine. Of course I had complications after my RNY and now am afraid I will not be the norm.
BAH!
(sorry for the vent and thanks for listening)

I was a bit scared too when the OB mentioned that this was the reason that she was sending me to the high risk DR - of course then when I heard that it also meant an US a month I was a happy camper! lol
Just know that if you are in abdominal discomfort (OK pain) get your preggo butt to the OB or the ER and get checkd out! Better safe then sorry!
I would have been a bit worried but glad that they warned me up front. A more up to date article would have been nice.... there has to be more recent studies on this.

Probably not the most reassuring thing to read when right now you're just worried about staying pregnant and healthy...but forewarned is forearmed. Put it in the back of your mind so that, God forbid you start having problems, you at least know where to start looking for solutions...but know that the chances of it happening aren't high.

I am very familiar with that case since I was 6 months pregnant when that woman died and I had a few hernias. The reason they included it, I am sure, is because that woman was misdiagnosed over and over because she thought the pain was coming from her womb. In fact, for days they ran test after test and never checked her intestines until it was too late. For some reason the bariatric doctor insisted it was the baby. I believe the woman was still SMO when she died.
It is strange though that they choose that one rare complication to include. From my experience here, anemia seems to be something a lot of us have in common.

Interesting, Jennifer, I am relatively confident that if I went to the ER and called my surgeon with massive abdominal pain they would check those life threatening possible complications first - at least I would vehemently insist upon it.
I am sure they didn't want to scare me, but at the same time I am just trying to get through the early pg worries of miscarriage or ectopic or whatever. There will always be something to worry about I am sure - I just didn't need to read that. And I was feeling so good yesterday when I got my 3rd beta numbers back!!!
Anyhoo - thanks for the replies.
