Thank God for Nurses
I have reactive hypoglycemia. This is not news to me, and I keep candy/protein bars, etc. on hand in my purse, my car, my husband's car, etc.
So, I'm standing in the checkout line at the local warehouse club around 3:00 today. My plan was to have a VERY LATE lunch when I got home. All my stuff is on the conveyor belt, and I'll be cashed-out next. The transaction in front of me is taking forever as they need manager approval. I've been in line for a good 5 minutes and I start to feel funny...warm, sweaty, and my eyeglasses are fogging up because I am THAT warm. I touch my face, it is burning. I turn to the woman behind me and say "Is my face red?" She said "Yes, are you feeling OK?" I told her I am expecting and just needed some sugar, as I popped piece of a candy in my mouth, not even realizing it was sugar-free. Tsk--like that's gonna help low blood sugar! Luckily that woman is a registered nurse and had peanut butter crackers in her purse. Don't you just love it when stangers are kind? I used to keep PB crackers in my purse but got out of that habit (FAST) when there was that massive PB recall. I do keep granola bars in my car...but I'm not even sure I could have made it that far. Anyway...I'm so flighty these days I kind of forgot to eat lunch in a timely fashion.
I figured my hypoglycemia would probably act up in pregnancy and I have to say this was the quickest onset I've ever experienced. Now I know what to expect for the future though.
Moral of the story: Don't go 5 hours without eating--bad things happen. Also, restock purse with peanut butter crackers--ASAP!

Reactive hypoglycemia is usually when you eat too many carbs and your blood sugar spikes, then your body compensates and releases insulin and it plummets. I have it bad. If I eat 1/2 a bagel with cream cheese within 10 minutes I am clammy, shaking, sweating, and almost passing out - I keep OJ in the fridge at work and snacks everywhere I am - car-desk at work - purse and I always carry my lunch bag full of snacks if I am going out for more then an hour.
Thank God there was an RN behind you in line - so glad that you are OK! Food - often!
