"Maybe someday you'll decide you want a waist"

Hi--

OK, so I really like my MIL, but she (and others in my in-law family) just don't understand issues regarding being overweight, etc. They're more of the neurotic kind who walk off a 100 calorie snack so they don't drown in guilt. I kid you not when I say they took rug remnants and secured them to their basement floor to make a walking track in their basement. If they walk around the "track" 58 times, it equals a full mile. (I am NOT joking!)

After spending some time together on Monday, I was driving my MIL home. We were discussing my pregnancy and my newly-evident baby bump. I let her know that because of the excess skin in my abdominal area, I may not have the cute baby bump that most women have, but rather, a bumpy-bump. I explained that some gastric bypass patients go on to have plastic surgery but that I purposely wanted to wait until after I was done having children to have plastic surgery, partly because I'm scared to death of having it at all. Well, her response was "Maybe someday you'll decide you want a waist."

What? I seriously didn't know what to say. I felt very hurt, but I KNOW this woman is not malicious and thinks generally good things about me (to my knowledge).I feel sad, but at the same time, I feel like my MIL doesn't know any better. Anyway, I'm sharing it here because I think others might understand.

Gotta love the comments that come out of MIL's mouths.   My MIL asked me how I was going to be able to love another baby besides Hannah (after she had made several other negative comments about me being pregnant again).   I'm not for sure how I would have answered the "maybe someday you'll decide you want a waist" comment.  I probably would have sat there in shock then later think off all the smart butt comments I should have said.
Don't be surprised if you MIL really gets on your nerves after the baby is born.  I have a good relationship with mine (all in all) and I really struggled after Hannah was first born.  Anytime she tried to give me advice I felt like she was saying I didn't know what I was doing.
I'm sure most of that my was crazy hormones, but I just wanted to warn you it  may happen to you too.
Good luck!

It sounds like she kind of spoke w/ out thinking! I'm sure she didn't mean how it came out. She must have that "foot in mouth" disease! lol! My MIL has been giving my husband grief for being overweight - he is considered extremely obese. (Well she is also considered extremely obese.) Within hours of scolding my DH she makes a huge batch of homemade caramel rolls for us to chow down on. I guess she didn't think about the fact that I just had WLS and can't eat them and they would actually torture me instead. She also forgot about the fact that my DH is overweight and she wants him to do something about it... MIL's can be complicated!!

Paula I understand.  I've made the same decision, but luckily my MIL is in England and I don't think she'd say something like that anyway....she is british after all.  LOL  My family has been supportive and agreed with that decision because why have the PS just to stretch it out again with a baby??  Don't worry about it, you are making a wise decision and I bet she meant nothing by it.

I dont think older people really even think before they speak.  As far as the carpet track in the basement........LMAO. OMG i have a mental picture of this...........lol.  Like the speed walkers that go to the mall or Walmart early in the AM.......they are on a mission and you better get out of the way!  lol

Paula- I am sure that since she is generally a well intentioned woman she didn't mean this nearly as horribly as it sounded. But that doesn't mean it ticks us off or hurts us any less!

My Mom and I are more like best friends. When I told her that we were TTC she said "shouldn't you get yourself healthy first" HELLO I lost 140 pounds over the last 2 1/2 years! My blood levels are perfect and I was cleared by all THREE Of my Dr's to get preggo! Then when I told her I had the positive HPT she congratulated me and said "that'll take some getting used to" now I know in both cases she is shocked and I am her only child so I am sure it is hard for her but I was so pissed for a few days following ea*****ident! She has since been my biggest supporter (and always has been!)

I am in the same boat - I am waiting until I am done having kids to consider my tummy tuck because I don't want to "ruin" it and I am hoping that by then my insurance will cover it! lol

Hang in there - I think we should see pics of your cute growing baby bump :)
