Hello everyone

I have been having tooth pain for a while...I went to the Dentist a few months ago
and he told me I had a cavity but that he was not going to do any work because of the pregnancy UNLESS my doctor recommended it.
I have gone for the past 3 months with a litle pain here and there, but this morning I went to bite down on a bagel and I thought someone had hit my tooth with a hammer.... I hate tooth pain...  :(    :(
I want to know has anyone gotten any root canals or any dental work pass 20 weeks of pregnancy, I know I have to talk to my Doctor and I will... But I really cant deal with this pain and with all the talk about meds and jow they can affect the babies I wouldnt want to risk it...
well any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had to have a cavity filled when I was pregnant with Kaden.  I *think* I remember having to get my doctor's ok, but both doctors agreed that taking care of dental work (not elective of course) can and should be done if needed.  Dental health has a big impact on your total health, so don't ignore it, especially if you're in pain now.  Call your doc on Monday and see what he recommends.  I had 2 kinds of shots I could have, and they had to give me a LOT, because they were more topical than they would have normally used I guess.  It was not fun, but the next day I felt so much better.  Good luck!

Yes I had to have dental work done. I broke a very large filling out of my tooth and the nerve was exposed. I ended up needing a crown. They called to get approval from my OB before doing any work. I had to be numbed with the novicaine shot 6 times because I could still feel it. I had to get a temporary crown that would not stay put and then the perminant 2 wks later. The dentist will probably want to see documentation that it is okay to do any procedures, but my OB said that dental work being done during pregnancy is not uncommon. Good luck!

I agree with Donna's reply, my dentist did fill my cavity a few months ago. He said that if I could wait that would be fine, but he was able to do it after the second trimester if my pain was that bad. I elected to do it because I couldn't stand it. I do have another cavity, its more mild so I opted to wait until after to fix it.

Hi. I had a root canal done when I was 5 months pregnant. My ob/gyn wrote a letter stating it was okay for the root canal and suggested a pain killer that I could take. I can't think of the pain killer now that I'm typing this. Just talk to your ob/gyn, I'm sure it'll be fine. I have to have a couple of x-rays done too, but they just double covered my stomach during the x-ray.

Hi, I had to have my wisdom tooth pulled and I had a cleaning.  My wisdom tooth had literally broken in half and started to decay.  If I had waited any longer it would have gotten infected, but I kept it cleaned out as much as possible but the pain was unbearable.  I had to get a letter of clearance from my OBGYN and it stated what meds they could give me.  also I had to have an x-ray done, so I had to have a double shield put on.  I had one put on my pregnant belly and then one on myself to protect little one.

It was fine.  Get it taken care of asap because infection can cause you to go into premature labor.

Take care,
Fran
