question re: vitamins - conflicting advise!
Hello everyone!
I went to my GYN yesterday to have my IUD removed - hubby and I are going to start trying for baby #2 around the fall! SO excited!
I told my surgeon about my plan, and he advised that I continue my normal vitamin regimen (2 multi, 2 calcium, 1 sub-lingual B12 and 1 iron) and add a prenatal vitamin throughout the pregnancy.
My GYN told me that once I was actually pregnant that I would need to stop my multi's and JUST be on a prenatal (with my calciums, etc)
So, which is right? My GYN told me too much vitamin A is bad for baby and that's why I would need to stop the multi's. So, what have you been told?
Oh, yes, I am an RNY pt, just over 1 year out.
Thanks!!

I take the B12, Biotin, Calcium and prenatal......i questioned my surgeon as well b/c the DR told me to get off everything except the prenatal....b/c the prenatal has everything that i need to be taking. the Surgeon said to stay taking the iron...but that was making me constipated AND there is enough iron in the prenatals....i too was a year out when i got pregnant and i have 5 weeks to go and ive been fine with those pills i listed.
Check your labels.
Vitamin A can be found in supplements in a few different forms, with the predominant 3 being beta carotene, retinyl acitate, and retinyl palmitate.
Vitamin A in the form of BC is the most common form of A supplementation because, and I am saying this unequivicably, IMPOSSIBLE TO OD ON. It cannot be fetaltoxic, which is what your OB is concerned about. The absolute worst that would happen is that you would turn orange. Not bad at all, just orange like a carrot. Not a fashion statement, to be sure, but not bad for you or baby, either.
It requires 7 units of BC to create one usable unit of retinol (Vitamin A). This massive requirement makes BC the safest, yet most inefficient of the vitamin A supplements.
So look at your supplements. If the lion's share is in BC, then I'd stick with your multi. That's what I did.
Also, you need to make sure you are getting 800mcg folic acid, 2000mg calcium citrate, plenty of D, B-12, iron, etc. And expect blood draws every 8 weeks to check these numbers..

Hi,
I'm not actually pg yet. But when I went to my OB/gyn for my reg appt in Jan and told her I was going to start ttc, she started to tell me she wanted me to start a prenatal vitamin. I rminded her of my RNY and that I was about to start on a new bariatric multivitamin (I had ordered "Celebrate" multivitamins and they were on the way so I didnt have them with me)- and she said that was fine as long as there's enough Folic Acid in them (in 2 chewables theres 800mcg)
I also continue to take... Calcium.. B12... D.. and Iron
So, yes, vitamin advice will always be conflicting..... Good luck!
Lisa
