Since I don't use OPK I dont know when I ovulate. I was told if you count back 14 days from the start of your period thats when you ovulated. Is this true for everyone?

nope. Best way is to use the OPK or to track your cervical mucus & temperature. There is a great book out there - "taking charge of your fertility" It was easy to understand and SO helpful! I got pregnant in our 4th month of following their guidelines.

Happy TTC!

I am glad I asked! I will look for that book today. Did you have fertility problems before WLS?

Sure did!! I have PCOS and was told about 6 years ago that I would never have children - VERY hard for anyone to hear especially someone in their early 20's! I had my WLS (RNY) in Jan 2007 and 2 1/2 years later and down 135-140 pounds we were blessed! I am almost 11 weeks along now and so far so good!

I got the book online at Amazon - but I also saw it in Borders last time I was there.

Hope this all helps. And feel free to ask anything - these ladies are great and such a wealth of knowledge!

I second Liz re the book.  I was astounded how much I DIDN'T know re what was going on w/my body each month when I read the book.  Back a hundred years ago when I was in high school, sex ed basically consisted of if you have sex w/o protection, you will probably get pregnant...no period...you are pregnant...you get pregnant you have a baby.  Somewhere in between period to period, you ovulated...but no info on when or how to tell it happened, etc.

I started the TTC journey only tracking the EWCM each month...and that worked fine...I got pg three times and mc three times all w/in 11 months.  They've now determined that my uterine lining isn't thick enough to sustain a pregnancy (among other issues), so they have me on hormones for that that I think are screwing w/the EWCM...so I started temping to find a better way to track it.  If you're cycle is pretty regular and if you feel confident in trying it once you read the book...I'd say start w/jus****ching the CM and see what happens.

Good luck!

Please forgive me but is CM something thats just gonna show up on your panties or toilet paper? I've been looking and I haven't seen any yet!

It should show up on your panties and your toilet paper...but to really 'test' for it, wash your hands, then use your finger to feel yourself up.  If you get some of the cervical fluid, the one to show if you're ovulating or getting ready to should look like egg whites...usually clear, sometimes white, and sticky.  It should stretch between your fingers.  You should also be able to feel a difference in the position of your uterus.  Around the time you're ovulating, it pulls up higher in your body and is a little more 'open' feeling, versus the rest of the month it'll be lower and more closed feeling.

That is not true for everyone. I had a short luteral phase (10 days). So, that meant that I would start 10 days after I ovulated. When I was on progesterone, that made me have a 14 day luteral phase. By charting I noticed I had a shorter luteral phase.

I charted for 11 months and was pregnant after three IUI cycles. I lost the baby this month at 9 weeks. I really think that charting with fertility friend really helped me. I could see my cycles and my temperature shift, and cervical mucus changes. I did read the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" when we started TTC.

Good luck,
Traci
