low blood sugar?

Since before I found out I was pregnant I started having dizzy spells but today I was trying to cook lunch (stuffed mushrooms yummy!) and I had a dizzy spell while standing (they usually happen when I try to stand up from sitting). I was just standing there and everything started to go blurry then my heart started to race I got sweaty and my hands started to shake. I'm pretty sure it's low blood sugar so I reached for some candy and sat down and after a few min I felt better.

Since I know what it is and I can handle it I don't need to rush to a doctor right? I did call James to let him know what had happened and I asked him to get my a blood glucose monitor on his way home, which might not be until tomorrow since he had overnight duty tonight. I have the truck but I don't want to drive since I know this could possibly happen on the way to or from the store. There is no point in taking the risk.

Have any of you had any experience with this during pregnancy?

That used to happen to me a lot when I was pregnant with Libby.  It was crazy.  However, I have noticed it even happened when I wasn't pregnant either.  It sucks.  Make sure you are getting all of your fluids.  Also, Walgreens usually has these monitors free with mail in rebate.

Actually, it sounds more like low blood pressure than low blood sugar.

When you stand up and get dizzy, this is called postural hypotension, and standing still in one position for any length of time will cause blood to pool to your feet which will drop your BP.  In fact, while preggers, most people will have lower-than-normal BP until the very end due to increased blood volume.

Do you have a bp monitor at home?

No I don't. I guess I need to put it on my list of stuff to get.

It happened a while after I binged on Cheetos that's another reason why I thought it might be blood sugar. Maybe it's both?

We can get both.  I have hypoglycemia AND neurocardiogenic syncope (a form of low BP) so yes, it's possible.

You can try this as a test:

Go stand against a wall, a door, etc.  Make it up against something that in case you do fall, you don't hurt yourself.  Stand COMPLETELY still.  Don't move your toes, your fingers, your head.  Watch TV if you want, but don't move at all.

If you start to feel the same way, then lie down, cross your legs and sqeeze them TIGHTLY, and pump your fists.  This will help get blood back up to your brain.  This is a basic test for low BP.  There's an official form of the test called a tilt table test,

I got dizzy when i stood off the couch to walk to the wall. Once i was on the wall I stood there 5min and didn't feel anything accept heavy hands. Is 5min enough of a test?

I passed out at 9:27.  Give it 10 minutes.

OK 10min didn't go so well. I didn't pass out but I did start feeling clammy and sweaty. I don't think I can force myself to stand there until I pass out but i'm pretty sure at some point I would.

Should I go to a doctor or will increasing salt help? I don't like doctors, they never really do anything to help.

I get that way too.... but I checked my blood sugar during one of my "episodes"  and it was 50. I just sit down and down OJ and chocolate. Its actually pretty scary because of how BAD I feel during that. And I have noticed it happens when I have been standing... like doing the dishes or something like that.  I also check my BP... but its fine.   Sorry I cant help you... but your not alone!!!!  :-)
