Is it weird that I don't get an ultrasound til around 20 weeks?  We are not doing any screening or testing since I would have this baby no matter what was going on.  Is this normal?  Up till then just fetal heart rate starting at 10 weeks.

Some insurance companies will only pay for the one at 20 weeks.  It's perfectly normal.

Hmmm...from what I have seen around here, most get an us around 7 to 8 weeks to confirm viability and dates. 20 weeks is a long time to wait. For Emma I had one at 5 ( I was seeing an RE) one at 8, one at 12 and one at 20. This one is high risk due to diabetes and I have had one every 2 weeks. I don't think it would be bad to ask your ob for a viability scan at around 7 weeks or so. Have they checked your betas??

I won't have my first US until 11 weeks to check for heartbeat and viability. I think that it depends totally on your OB and insurance. But if they check for the heartbeat at 10 weeks thats good! At least you aren't in suspense the entire time!

I was talkiung to my Mom about this last night, I am 29 years old - she NEVER had an ultrasound. Thank God we don't live in those "dark ages"! lol

I think it depends on the doc. When I first called my OB to tell her I was pregnant, the receptionist said i wouldn't get an u/s until at least 16-20 weeks. I freaked out! They didn't even want me to come in for a confirmation blood test!

I called back and spoke to my OBs nurse and she had me come in for a beta, u/s at 7 weeks and then my doc requested another at 10 weeks. They checked the h/b at 14 weeks with the doppler and then another u/s with growth scan at 16 weeks.

I think my doctor is a bit more lenient on the u/s b/c of my history of Infertility and WLS...

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Most of my friends had their first ones at 19/20 weeks so it's not too weird.  I had them more often with my last one because of spotting and other issues (not WLS related issues)

This one I've had 2 so far since I'm having twins.  My last one was at 10 weeks and my next one isn't until 19 weeks.  I'm kinda bummed I have to wait so long!

I think it just depends on your Doctor as well as your insurance company. I have had 5 already.

I think like others said it depends on your OB.  My OB tends to do them earlier, last year waiting for my yearly apt, a lady was 8 weeks waiting for her first ultra sound.  Before my MC I was scheduled for one at 7w4d.

Thanks for the answers guys.  I am thinking I might ask if it's possible to do more since I am SURE my insurance will cover it (they cover everything!!).  Plus it's my first and I am 32.  God bless you all and your babies (here and to come).
