Blood clotting disorder

I have it too!  I had a perfectly healthy pregnancy 5 years ago, didn't know I had it then.  Then I had a pregnancy a few years ago, got a superficial clot in my leg, found out about the disorder and then had a miscarriage.  I then had my lap band and got a DVT in my arm and then put on coumidin for life.  When I got pregnant this time, I started lovenox as soon as I got a positive test.  I was doing it twice a day for the whole pregnancy and just switched to heparin last week.  It gets out of your body faster than lovenox so they usually switch you around 36 weeks.
It is a pain, I won't lie.  But it is worth it for a healthy baby.  I only had a few times that I just didn't think I could give myself one more shot, I cried and got over my pitty party.  Now I only have 28 more shots to go!!
I am the first person in my family to be diagnosed, so we don't know where it came from.  I think I know but that side of the family is sure that it isn't them, yea right!
Let me know if you have any questions.  If your dr doesn't seem to understand it all and you aren't getting the answers that you want, you can always go to a specialist.
Sorry you have to deal with this too, it seems like it is getting more common.

Well I am glad you know some things about this. Makes me feel safer. I am worried about the doctor who send me home to research and come back and talk to him. Well thats crazy to me. I thought it was his job to tell me about it then I could still look it up if I wanted to. He said though its up to me if I want treatment. Well how should I know? I have never had issues with it before but my mom has lately so it scares me more. Thank you for sharing this with me.

I had 4 children before my WLS (1 was stillborn due to a true knot in his cord... a cord accident and no medical problems).  I had 3 miscarriages after I had WLS.   The first was a blighted ovum at 6 wks and was considered a fluke.  The 2nd I carried until 11wks 5 days and say the heartbeat and then one day just started bleeding.  No explanation for the m/c.  The 3rd one I carried until 16 wks and saw a viable fetus with a heartbeat, too.  Went in for 16 wk appt and no more HB.

Finally, they did mutliple blood tests for disorders, etc.  They also did genetic testing on the baby and she was normal.  One of my blood tests came back slightly abnormal.  It was my Protein C activity.  I saw the maternal fetal specialists at Magee womens hospital in Pittsburgh and had a terrible time.  They insisted that this was not causing my M/C's.  ALthough, I had just read a report from the university of Georgia that said if ANY of the blood clotting tests came back in an abnormal range that it very well could be the cause of m/c's.

So I got pregnant AGAIN and my doctor put me on 1 baby asprin a day to keep my blood thinner.  Even though he wasn't quite sure that the protein C activity was the problem he did it because it wouldn't hurt.  Well low and behold... I have a beautiful 16 month old daughter.  I was instructed to stop taking it about 3 wks before delivery because I was having a c-section and this time would allow for my platlettes and such to return to normal for the surgery.

I have a theory behind the 4 pregnancies with no problem before WLS and then 3 m/c after WLS and the whole blood clotting thing.  Even though I have no hard evidence to back it up other than my daughters successful delivery after the baby asprin.  Maybe we've always bordered on the blood clotting problem with past pregnancies, but now that we had surgery and we don't absorb everything we need like iron and b12 etc... it pushed us over the edge and now we have a hard time sustaining a pregnancy with our abnormal blood clotting.

Anyway.. good luck!

Hugs
B

I have been back and forth. Had miscarriages then pregnancy that was fine then miscarriages. Strange no one ever tested until now when I am 34 years old and this one is it. I like the asprin idea though. Sounds better than shots and all since I am having no symptoms. What scares me is I was having horrible pain in my legs twice now and my legs both felt like major charlie horses and when my husband would massage them I would cry and felt like a baby but it would help. Now its like I feel I have to worry about that and think what if its not charlie horses. I think he was a jerk to send me home to look stuff up though. I am happy you shared this with me though. Helps knowing more people have it. Not that its a good thing but that I can hear other peoples stories.

I also have a blood clotting disorder (MTHFR) and lost my first son.  He was born stillbirth at 30 weeks.  They found out after I had him that I had a blood clotting disorder.  This pregnancy they started me on lovenox injections once a day from 8 weeks on.  I delivered my son 10 days ago.  I definetly agree that you need to see a hematologist.

Hugs,

Patty
