Ultrasound Question

OK So I have had to wait FOREVER for an ultrasound - ok so it'll be 11 weeks but it feels like forever! lol I go next thursday (6/18) and I'll be exactly 11 weeks from my LMP. Do you think that they'll have to do the ultrasound internally or will they be able to see the heartbeat externally at this stage in the game? Just curious what to mentally prepare myself (and a nervous hubby) for. If it is done internally does it hurt or just uncomfortable? I have to go with a full bladder - that's going to be the hardest part - I hate the feeling of a full bladder! lol

Thanks ladies!

When I had my u/s at exactly 11 weeks, the doctor was able to scan my belly and I saw my baby and heard and saw the heartbeat.  The baby was moving its little limbs.  It will be a little uncomfortable with the full bladder being that they are pressing on your abdoment but its not painful.

You and hubby will be so excited.  Good luck to you.

Since you are further than 10 weeks you will have an external ultra sound. If they were doing it internal they wouldn't have to drink water...its the opposite they have you empty your bladder. The internal is just awkward. Doesn't hurt at all. Are you having the Nuchal Translucency test?

Thanks Jackie! I opted out of the NT test - doesn't change my plan and well i am afraid of a false-positive (know someone this happened to) this is just my first US of the pregnancy!

It often depends on the place where you go all of the ones I had before 13 weeks were internal at the 13 weeks on they  were external!!  Ya know that is funny you mention  the full bladder with my first a long time ago I had to have a full bladder but with this baby they have never told me that again, I was just talking about that the other day. I think that is one of those things that depends on the place where you go!

If they want you to have a full bladder then they must be doing an external u/s because that makes no difference for an internal u/s. If for some reason they can't get a good heart beat I would be prepared for an internal u/s just in case. They don't hurt at all and aren't really that uncomfortable. It's not like a pap where you are all legs spread wide open and what not. It's much more relaxed. The Dr isn't face first between your legs. They are paying attention to the monitor. lol!! It was way better then a pap!!

I'm excited for you!!

My 11 week ultrasound was internal. I have had a zillion with fertility treatments so they don't phase me anymore! LOL! They don't hurt, just a little uncomfortable! Hope everything goes well!!! :)

I had an ultrasound done at 9 weeks and it was external.   I don't think they  will do an internal one if you'll be 11 weeks.. if they do I've had that before too and it didn't hurt at all.
It's a fun visit ... you'll be so happy to finally see you're little been.   :)

When I went for my first U/S I was only 7 weeks 3 days.  And they didn't have to do an internal, we were also able to hear the heartbeat.

Thanks ladies!! I was thinking it would be extrenal but thought that I would ask - I wanted to warn hubby if it might be internal - he's not used to the things that go on in GYN offices! lol I tried to explain a pap to him one night and he was looking at me like I was nuts! lol

Thanks as always!
