Glucose test

I'm confused. Should I refuse to do this test or will I be forced to take that syrup stuff that will induce dumping?

I'm really scared. Even 2 years after surgery I am still very sensitive to sugar. I really don't want to take that test. Is there an alternative test I can ask for?

Hi Cristy...

There is an alternative blood test I believe....I was 4 years post op and did the test....was fine until about 2 hours later and dumped pretty bad (and am not that sensitive to sugar unfortunately)....THANK GOD that I did not have to take the second one.....

So yes, ask your OB for the alternative test if you are that sensitive.....

Ann

There are alternatives to the god-awful glucola drink~ My OB was really good with doing a fasting blood test on me after even pancakes/syrup (another alternative to the glucola) made me ill.  Sometimes I'm a lot more sugar sensitive than others.  There's also one where you eat a certain amount (18, I think) of Jelly Bellies and then do the finger stick.  Be sure to ask the OB~  Let me know if you need anything.  *hugs*

I am really shocked by the number of women on here that do take it.

the first thing out of my mouth when I went to the ob was that I wasn't going to do the test.  he said they'd never have an RNY patient do it.

I'll be doing a different fasting test.

The alternative is a 2 hour fasting test. I have to have this done once a week now because it was elevated when they tested around 24wks. I go in fasting and get drawn, then I go eat and come back exactly 2 hrs after my last bite of food and get drawn again. I have been doing it weekly since that time and it has been normal ever since. I would ask your OB if the 2 hr fasting test is sufficient.

I recently did mine. I fasted the night /morning of an had a blood test done in the AM.  My OB had no clue about how it would effect me and i had to explain everything to him and really stand my ground on not doing the drink.

My OB gave me the Freestyle home monitor and I did finger sticks every morning both before and after breakfast for 3 days. Very easy, virtually painless and everything was fine.

Good luck!

My OB/Perinatologist did not want me doing it so instead I had a glucose monitor that I used 4x a day for two weeks and it tracked the results and the docs office downloaded and reviewed them. They felt this was more accurate for a RNY patient. So this is an alternative as well as the fasting test others mentioned. You do not HAVE to do the glucola drink.

I just did my "glucose test" yesterday.  My dr asked for a fasting glucose for 12 hours and then also my #'s for over the last 3 months.  Based on that outcome, we'll see how he proceeds from there.

Thanks for all your responses. I'm so relieved. I kept reading posts about people taking this test and it was freaking me out a little bit.
