So I just found out that I am about 5 weeks pregnant, first child and first after my surgery (9-11--07)
I am excited but curious about vitamins... I currently take OptiSource 4 times daily in addition to 2 calicum chews a day.  When you were pregnant did your doctor put you on a prenadal or did you stay on your post bariatric vitamin?  I am worried about absorption of one of those hugs vitamins.
I am slightly nervous and all that, hoping that the surgery doesnt hurt my chances of a healthy baby... More than anything I am sure im just nervous going thru this for the first time......

Sorry I guess I should have introduced myself too, since this is my first real post in this area.
My names Amanda, I am 27, this is my first pregnancy.  I had gastric bypass on September 11th 2007.  I am super happy about the possibility of this new baby but also concerned that my surgery will impact the health of this child.  I am happy to meet all of you and I hope to find real friendship and support thru this process... what 5 weeks down only 35 left haha :)

Hi! Welcome to the board and congratulations to you!

I don't have an answer for you since I'm not yet pregnant. But when I talked to my OB about planning pregnancy, she wanted to put me on a pre-natal, but when reminded of my post-gastric bypass status, she said my bariatric vitamins were fine as long as they had 800mcg of folic acid, which they do (I use Celebrate).    I think you'll get responses all over the board of what people's ob/dr's say to take.

HTH!

"hoping that the surgery doesnt hurt my chances of a healthy baby"
My advice is wipe that thought out of your mind.  If you take your vitamins, drink your water, keep up on your OB visits, eat healthy, there is no reason WLS would hurt your chances of a healthy baby.  Usually the baby takes what it needs from your diet and from your body and if anyone is going to suffer, it would be you, not the baby.  MANY of us have had healthy pregnancies and perfect babies after WLS.  I had surgery a couple weeks after you, and had a perfect baby.  She's perfect to me anyway!
I took my mega multi with my OB's permission since it is actually superior to any prenatal I could find.  I did take a little extra folic acid.  If you are not taking that already, go and get some TODAY and start immediately (I am not a doctor so this is my advice as a layperson.)
Keep coming around here and keep us updated!
Congratulations and wishing you a happy and healthy 9 mos!

First - congrats!

Secondly - my OB and surgeon have me taking prenatals only - they said that the amount of vitamins in the prenatals combined with the vitamins in my multi-vitamin would be too much and so far my labs have all come back perfect and I'm 31 weeks with a perfectly healthy - above average little mister!

Make and appointment with your OB, inform your surgeon and nut, increase your healthy carbs, drink lots of fluids, and have a happy and healthy 9 months!

Congrats!!! I don't know if you remember me off the 20's board but I remember you lol I am almost 9 weeks pregnant and this board is wonderful for all the advice/ questions you could ever have!

Like someone on the board once said "your womanly parts have nothing to do with your stomach" so the pregnancy will not be hindered by your GBS...just get your labs checked regularly and all should be just fine!!

Happy and Healthy 9 months to you!!

As the other posters have said - CONGRATS!
Second...remember that people in 3rd world countries are able to keep their population going while starving.  And we aren't starving.  :)

If you want to keep taking your regular vitamins, add some folic acid.  Or, the Target or Walmart prenatals are the size of a tylenol and work great!

I got pregnant with my last one at 4 months post op.  NOT meaning to, but it happened.  He still managed to be a 10.5 lb baby with the little that I was absorbing.
Baby will take what they need from you and you get what's left.  Some of us gain nothing during our pregnancies, some of us gain 10-15 lbs, some of us gain 50.  Okay, that was ME.  Yeah, 4 months post op and still managed to gain 50 lbs.  I lost 42 within 2 weeks of having him though.

I was told to keep up my vitamins, add 200-300 calories a day in the 2nd trimester, and drink plenty of water.  You'd be amazed how EASY it is to add a few hundred extra calories to your day.
*protein shake
*some cheese
*2 different 100 calorie packs - one in the am, the other in the pm

Good luck!  You will be fine, really!

Congrats! I suggest talking to your surgeon as well as your OB and plan on having regular blood work. Most people up their calcium some and many seem to report low iron issues. The main thing to watch is vitamin E I think. I'm sure other people will have more to say but I am so happy to hear about your pregnancy and wish you the best!

I take 2 prenatls a day. Also 3 calcium. B complex. Prevacid. I get a b12 shot once a month. I eat every 2 hours. I had to add carbs back in. I feel pretty good though. I drink about 100 ounces of water a day. Just stay calm and relax and enjoy!! Good luck and welcome to the board!!!!

Vitamins:

1) Make sure you are taking 2000mg of calcium CITRATE per day.. not carbonate.  Carbonate doesn't absorb well in an RNY gut.  And you need the extra calcium while baby is building bones.

2) Be sure you are taking a b-complex, with Thiamin (B1) in it.  If you start massive pukage, take two.  Also, make sure you are getting AT LEAST 800mcg of folic acid or folate.

3) Make sure you are getting at least 500mcg of b-12 per day.

4) Make sure you are taking your iron, and be sure it's away from your calcium.  Vite C helps absorption -- 200mgs C for every 30mgs of elemental iron

5) Be sure you are getting AT LEAST 64oz of fluids.  Trust me -- it helps with the constipation.

6) Plan on getting blood draws at least every 8 weeks.  Ask for folate, b-12, b1(if puking), 0,25(OH)D, ferritin, hct, hgb, and depending on how you feel some others.
