Camping with a baby?

Have you done it?  How did it go?  What was bad/good?  Any advice/tips/suggestions/warnings?  We have reservations for a campsite at Lake Tahoe in a few weeks and I am really excited because we haven't been camping since before getting pregnant I think.  We are thinking about bringing the pack n play, using it as her crib, and using our really huge tent.  I'm nervous about how she will sleep in the wild, will she cry all night and keep up the other campers, etc.....will bears be attracted to the sound of a crying baby?  We're going to give it a shot.  If it doesn't work, we can always come home after the first night, but we are definitely going, so don't try to talk us out of it!  :)  Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences and such.

My mom took babies camping for years. We all lived through it. My biggest advice is....and I might get flamed for it...but make sure you use bug repellant with DEET in it. It has risks, but  you do NOT want ticks getting on the baby or you. They might make a safer one for babies, but I'm not sure. Also, don't be too worried about sleep schedules and such while you're out there. Sophie may sleep like a log(soft music helps) or she may not. She may be too excited. As for the bears, keep a fire going and your food(and dirty diapers) locked away. Take lots of pics and have fun!!!

I agree about the deet.  The benefits outweigh the risks I think...as long as I don't put it on her skin.  I'm a little concerned about the sleeping because she uses a white noise machine at home and is extremely dependent on it.  Maybe it takes batteries, I'll have to check.  The food and diapers will be in the bear locker for sure!  Will take pics!  Thanks a lot.

Totally agree with the DEET. I work for a peds group. We recommend ONLY products with DEET as they are the only ones that repel ticks. Also they don't really recommend spraying the child, just outer layer of clothing and tent. We went on a weekend when my son was a little over a year and it was great. I would highly recommend bringing a stroller, pack and play, lots of toys and easy to prepare foods for your little one. My son slept better outside (in a tent) then he ever did at home. Also if you formula/bottle feed make sure you plan that accordingly. Very few camp sites have hot running water to really wash a bottle. Good Luck and enjoy !!!

Yeah, they have water there, but I'm not sure about hot.  We could boil water I guess.  I know there are showers though, so maybe I could wash bottles in the shower.  LOL.  I'm only kidding......  Thanks a bunch!

We started taking our son camping when he was only about 5-6 months old.  Yes, he did cry alot at night, or it seemed like it to me.  But we had great camping neighbors each time and they weren't bothered by it.  The big problem we had was at night, he would only drink warm formula and we were trying to heat it up on the little stove, it was never quick enough for him and that is when he cried alot.  I wonder now if a coffee thermos would work to keep it alittle warm, don't know if that is safe or not???
But he loved it, and we are already making plans for later this summer once we have this baby.
They make neat nets for the top of the pack and plays that keep some of the bugs out.
Have fun, she will be just fine.

I have a bug net to go over the stroller and car seat if we put her in those, but not one for the pack n play......hmmm......  Thanks, Chrissy

We camped with our little one when she was just 8 weeks old!  We just take plenty of bottled water, to mix the formula.  We had a microwave to help heat the water (just shake well to mix it).  We used the pack n play for her to sleep.

We found she slept better!  I think it was the outdoors air.  It wears them out!   Also, take plenty of blankets/stroller, and /things to help keep her busy!

Thanks.  That is one worry--is what to do to keep her happy......at home she spends a good chunk of time in her jumperoo and swing, but I don't think we'll be bringing those.  Oh well. I'm sure the outdoors will provide plenty of fun for her....swimming and such.
