Breastfeeding ??

Hi all -

New here & asking for future reference

I've always heard that breastfeeding is great for losing baby weight because of extra calories your body burns so i'm wondering .. should a RNY'er (any procedure really!) breastfeed? Is it too much havoc on the body to produce breast milk while already malabsorbing?

Thanks!

I plan to breastfeed as long as my labs allow me too.  I plan to find out what my needs are as I continue my pregnancy.

I nursed my son for 8 months, my daughter for 3.  going back to work ruined both relationships too early so I am determined since I"m a student/sahm this time, to make it work.

I know many ladies on here have successfully breastfed and are still doing so! I plan too as well! For me personally I don't have problems with malabsorbing.

I have six children two post RNY and currently pregnant and breastfeeding the 17 month old. I have had no trouble nursing them, the last 5 that is. I step up my calcium, I buy liquid iron, and continue to take prenatals. My labs (knock on wood) were good.  My two cents.

Hi Cathie! I am currently nursing my 17 months old and he never had any formula. This is my second post op baby. I nursed my daughter 18 months.

I have a theory that because we don't have periods while nursing that we actually don't lose as much iron as someone who gets a period 6 weeks after giving birth.

As far as losing weight, I gain a pound a month while nursing. I have done this pre op and post op. I did start counting calories and exercising in February and the weight is coming off now.

Breastfeeding can and does help with weight loss and is okay for RNY'ers to do. Just as with a non RNY person you could have issues with supply but that is not WLS related. I breastfed my son from birth to one year old. I gained 29 lbs with my pregnancy and has lost it all within 2 mths. Hope that helps.

If you can, it is highly recommended for weight loss and there is evidence that BFing may help prevent reproductive cancers.  RNY has nothing to do with it in my opinion, but ask your doctor if you're concerned.

I wish that I could breastfeed but I have augmentation w/implants in 2006 and now dont produce anything. I tried and she cried her eyes out and would be like a wild animal shaking her to get on the boob. She would latch on and get seriously p*ssed to get nothing, I felt like a bad mom because I wanted to do it! I hope you have better luck.
