Yeah they are freehand, however, I did figure out how to stencil them yesterday for my sister, then we didn't do it. Oh well.
I used cheap Gerber onesies from Walmart. I got the 5 pack for like $8 and acrylic paint and some t-shirt paint. Just make sure the paint says non-toxic.
