OT: Denied life insurance

I want to tell you about me.
I never had life insurance, but wanted to have some due to getting the GBS. I applied for insurance  a few months before my surgery because I was told the same thing about getting denied afterwards. That is another reason why I refuse to get dx with depression because it follows you. I know it is for your mental health, but some medical things follow you negatively. When I need to talk with someone, I go through EAP and my PCP can give meds. My premiums were high, but I was told that after 2 years I could call them to review my file for a decrease. I did that and my premiums decreased. Now that is whole life insurance.
I just recently got a term life insurance policy as well. I was quoted one rate, but after they checked my medical records, the rate went up slightly and it was said due to GBS.
I think you will have a better chance not getting denied if you obtain private life insurance (not the one through husband job) on your own.

Even if you don't mention GBS and depression, they will find out through some health information database. Cause I didn't mention it with the term insurance.

When I went to our regular agent, who only represented one company (Farmer's), she could only get a whole life policy with a limited death benefit and high cost.  The uninformed head-up-their-*ss insurer said the long-term risks of gastric bypass surgery are “unknown" (so better that I didn’t have the surgery and you’d insure me with elevated blood sugar, blood pressure, etc.?) and I could reapply three years after the date of my surgery.  I went to our AFLAC rep who is independent and he was able to find at least one company (Prudential) that would insure me on a term policy with a much higher death benefit and less money, and I was six months pregnant!

Hi Malena--

Isn't is HIGHLY IRONIC that being at stable, much-healthier weight (as compared to being morbidly obese) makes an insurance company NOT want to insure someone? It's counter-intuitive if one were to ask me.

Uh-oh....my husband and I applied for life insurance over a month ago...already had our medical exam....and haven't heard a thing back. The nurse didn't so much as bat an eyelash when I mentioned the gastric bypass. I wonder if it is holding things up? Once I hear anything, I will be sure to let this board know.

Keep us posted Malena....and if you choose to fight, I'll be cheering for you!

P.S. Could you come to Massachusetts and make me some of your famous baked ziti for me? This pregnant woman is much too lazy to make it for herself today!

I agree.  I am soooo much healthier now than I ever have been and yet they don't want to insure me.  Screw them :-)  I will definitely let you know what happens when I fight it.

I am actually planning on making baked ziti tonight for dinner.  Could you be here in 5.5 hours?  It will still be nice and warm then and I will even make some garlic bread and a salad to go with!  Yum :-)

Just an FYI ... I have personal experience with Allstate paying after a suicide.  The policy was written 25 years or so before the claim, not sure if that factors in but they did pay.

God Bless! Jen
