OT: Denied life insurance
So, now that Russ and I are married we switched me over to his benefits, one of which is life insurance. A week after we did that they sent me a medical history letter that I had to fill out. This, of course, included my RNY, my spinal fusion, brachioplasty and my meds I take for depression. I get this letter in the mail two days ago that said I have been DENIED life insurance because of my RNY and depression. Seriously????? I am so much healthier now than I ever have been. Plus, life insurance doesn't cover suicides so they shouldn't be worried about my depression. Anyone else have this issue? Did you fight it? I have life insurance through my work but I am seriously thinking about fighting it just because it ****** me off.

I've been thinking alot about getting life insurance. Isn't there a kind of life insurance we can get that doesn't look at medical history? That's what I'll need because I have a lot of issues (RNY and depression included in my list too). I don't think you can fight it because they can deny whomever they like. But I am talking out my butt. I could totally be wrong....I'm sure someone will correct me if I am. The guidelines they use do not follow common sense, that's for sure!
I was told prior to my weight loss surgery I would probably be denied life insurance for the rest of my life if I went through with it.....
My work has mandetory 2x my salary coverage --- that cannot be denied, but any additional life insurance requires medical history and I'll be denied.
(Ironically, I married someone who had a kidney transplant --- he will also be denied. So we are SOL when it comes to life insurance!)
If you fight it and win please please let us know.... I'd love to find there is a way to fight it !

You all made me want to fight the insurance company, so tomorrow I will bring the paperwork with me to work and have a little fun. I don't mind being a ***** every once in a while. I do have life insurance through work but it is only 1x my salary and they never asked for any sort of medical history. Maybe next time I just won't mention my RNY or depression. A-holes. I could have totally had the surgery after I got approved for insurance and then what would they do??

My surgeon's office told me about this when I applied for the surgery. They said it's because the surgery is still believed to be elective and is "medically experimental". It's BS but insurance companies will do anythingt they can to not have to pay people.
If you don't disclose it an get coverage... later when your children or spouse apply for the money... the insurance company may force an autopsy... and they'll find out you lied and since it's a breach of contract you will have thrown your money away.
It's a load of crap, but I don't think that there is anything to be done about it. Maybe as GB becomes more and more mainstream this will improve.
Good luck fighting it.

I don't know how true this is, but i've been told there is some center in Indiana or something that keeps a file on everyone and insurance companies will collect the premiums you pay and only check your file once they have to pay a claim. Then if it turns out you hid the RNY from them, you will have paid premiums for years and still Libby and Russ get nothing. That's what someone told me. Don't know if it's true.
