21 week appt for triplets

Ladies,

Today i had my 21 week ultrasound to check all the organs and measurements of all three babies.

They are all measuring right around 21 weeks.  The girl weighs 1 lb 2 oz and the boys are 1lb 2 oz and 1lb 1 oz each.

After a 2 hour scan the tech Said ok you can get dressed and I will be back with the doctor.  They come back in and the Dr. says I need you back on the table because I see something.  Keep in mind I have never met this doctor before as she is a Maternal Fetal medicine doctor.  I have to go there for my ultrasounds every 2 weeks.

So Long story short....the girl has a 2 vessel cord instead of a 3 vessel cord.  The boys are fine.  Anyone know about this?  The doctor said it can lead to small growth in utero, a sign of a heart problem, a chromosomal problem, or nothing at all.  So I have to have a fetal echo although she said that probably won't tell us anything.  I could have an amino but at this point do I really want to?

I am scared and nervous and praying that is amounts to nothing.  I mean her heart looked great today on the US and there is no sign of Downs or Spina Bifida.  Her growth is right on target but I am still beside myself at this point.  Not to mention that having triplets has made my hormone levels crazy as it is and now add this.  I mean how much more can one take.

I have a regular scheduled appt with my OB Friday morning.  Hopefully I will get more info from him.

Any advice or experiences with this?

My friend has 17 year old twins girls and one of them had this. That one also had Choroid plexus cysts and the other one had a tumor on her umbilical cord. They were born at 31 weeks because of infection in one of the sacks. She had one vaginally and the tumor cord one by C-section. Both are healthy teenagers now. If you would like I can give her your email if you would like to talk to her, or her phone number. PM me if you want them.

I've only read a tiny bit of info on it...like one time months ago (ie...I have no personal knowledge)...and from the snippet I read, it's not always bad news.  The only thing I'd read about it - on another support forum - this had happened to someone's baby and they went on to delivery a healthy baby.  Hopefully it'll just means they'll be watching your daughter a little closer as she bakes.  So far it seems she's growing at the same rate as her brothers - it's amazing how close in size they all are right now - her heartbeat appeared fine, and the U.S. didn't show spina bifida or downs...and I'd take that as encouraging.

I pray you get some answers from your dr...and that it's good news.

Overall sounds like a good appt!
As for the 2 vessel cord I have heard of it once a while back and it turned out to be the "nothing at all" SOOOO with that being said my gut tells me that is what you have to worry about...NOTHING at all! Easier said than done but do not let yourself get all worked up and worried as that can't help as long as everything else looks good like her heart and she is growing right on target I would take a deep breath and think positive thoughts!!  Do keep us updated OK!!

My niece was pregnant with my great nephew at the same time I was prego with Caelyn (her hubby and my husband are only a few years apart.  big age difference between my hubby and his bro).  Her son (he was a singleton) had this same issue and he was perfect at birth.  Well he was 9+ LBS and she had him naturally so she may think perfect might be a stretch LOL but the 2 chord thing just means that those 2 chords have to work harder than the 3 chords most little ones have.  I don't have a huge amount of experience with this, but from what i've seen, the most common concern with the 2 chord thing is the intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) which they monitor all of us post ops for anyway.  They should just monitor the babies closely and keep an eye on her size as she grows...I will keep my fingers crossed but I wouldn't stress too much if i were you.  just make sure to eat well and keep your spirits up.  right now, she's even with the boys so that isn't a problem yet.  It sounds like you are doing a great job growing those three!!!

My cousin just gave birth to an 8 lbs 2 oz baby boy, beautiful and perfect in every way, and he had a two vessel cord! So it can have a perfectly good outcome as long as the docs are watching you closely! Sounds like everything else is perfect! YAY!

OK, so I watch a ton of "Babies: Special Delivery" on the Discovery Health channel and have seen this on there.  LOL.  I agree with the last two posters...they will have to watch closely for the IUGR and possibly take the babies a bit earlier.  But the babies always make it ok!!

Good luck and try not to worry yourself.  I know, easier said than done.  When I was told that Kellen had a cyst on his brain at 16w pregnant, OMG...I researched it like crazy and thought for sure he's have trisomy 18.  Yeah, I worried myself sick for nothing.  LOL!  He came out perfect.  Well, moody, but perfect!

Good luck!

No experience with this but I have heard about it. What I have heard is most of the time the 2 vessels just have to work harder and it's all good. Good luck with this.
