Anyone see a CNM for their primary pregnancy care post WLS?
I have had DS so I know it's probably a good idea to be monitored by a perinatologist and my surgeon as well during any future pregnancy. But I'm wondering if anyone got their prenatal care with a nurse-midwife after WLS? I have an appointment coming up on June 2nd and I'll ask my midwife her opinions, but I'd love to know anyone's experiences too. I had an OB in my first pregnancy and I think I would prefer the care of a midwife this time around, but it's hard to figure out how to coordinate all the monitoring and get everyone on the same page.
I did not see a CNM, but I did see just a general practitioner. My surgeon's office knew of my pregnancy, but they were not really involved except at the very beginning with a nutritional consult, etc.
I loved seeing the GP, as opposed to an OB due to the fact that he was always there for my appointments.
In the end, an OB ended up delivering my daughter via emergency C-section, but it was nothing that seeing an OB from the start would have solved.
Good Luck!

I got pregnant with my fourth baby two weeks after my VSG surgery last summer. My son is now 5wks old and doing well. I saw my CNM through the whole pregnancy. I just had my surgeon send info to my midwife about my surgery and all that good stuff. The only thing that was different this time around from my other pregnancies is that I had a few more ultrasounds than normal. They just wanted to monitor the fetal growth and make sure everything was going well. I did not argue. Everything went well. I LOVE my midwife, I am definetely one that would tell any woman who wants more from her care provider to go with one! Good luck and congrats.
Full time mom of 3 and one on the way!!!!Full time nursing student @ WMU!
GO BRONCOS!
86 lbs. down and 78 more to go!
Thank you! BTW, I'm not pregnant yet - planning on waiting until I've gotten most of my weight off. But already planning, I just like to think things over. That's great that things went well and your team was on board. I don't mind monitoring, my big fear is being profiled too much, if that makes sense. I felt like I got treated like a ticking time bomb when I was a BMI in the 50s and pregnant and I'm worried I'll get treated like a DIFFERENT ticking time bomb if I get pregnant after WLS. LOL. Hopefully a midwife wouldn't be that skittish.
Congrats on your new son!
Congrats on your new son!
My OB supported my seeing a CNM for prenatal care because I was doing great, but the midwives weren’t comfortable because technically I was a high-risk (my age and IVF—nothing to do with WLS). So, my OB said I could see him for prenatal care and then ask for the midwife when I went into labor (ended up with a planned C-section so it was a moot point). Having WLS shouldn’t preclude you from seeing a midwife. As a matter of fact, for most of us I imagine we have healthier pregnancies because we weigh less and therefore have lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar, etc.
