VSG and pregnancy

Hi, just over 6 months out...not pregnant but know I will be within another year.  I was curious to know anyone who has VSG, how was the pregnancy?  Weight gain?  Health of the child?  Any complications?  Eating different?  Vitamins?  Any information will help greatly.  I don't think taking part of your stomach out will affect the baby as long as you eat good, correct?  Thanks!

I found out I was pregnant a month and a half out from surgery, so I'm a little different. However, as long as you eat correctly (you need to eat carbs when you are pregnant), and take your vitamins, you will be fine! My baby was 6lbs 13oz, born at 38 weeks 6 days. She's 5 months old now and doing awesome! I lost weight my entire pregnancy, and 30 pounds in the 2 weeks after she was born.

   Good luck!

I got pregnant after the year that you are told to wait.  I had lost 142 lbs and had stayed steady at 190 lbs, and wasn't patient enough to reach goal.  Have to say I have a gorgeous 1 month old now, who is doing great.  I was extremely careful with eating during my pregnancy, made sure that I ate every two hours and made sure that it was substance not junk.  I gained 28 lbs, and he weighed 7 lbs 10 oz, and was born at 39 weeks and 3 days.  I lost all the baby weight within the first two weeks, and am doing great right now.  I attempted to breastfeed but my milk supply did not come in, so he is formula fed.  I took a prenatal vitamin only, called obtrex, which was great, actually am still taking it.

Hope this helps - and good luck when you need it!!

Thanks, did your doctor recommend to only take the prenatal or your other vitamins also?  Congrats on a healthy baby!  Did your doctor ever have someone who had VSG as a patient before?

I am 11 weeks pregnant now with my 1st post-op baby. (2nd total) :-) My surgeon only said to take addition folic acid and to take prenatals instead of my regular vitamines. But that THAT WAS IT.... that was the only differences.   I will update you on the other questions as I recieve that info... lol. So far so good! Ultrasounds all look good.. Heartbeat is wonderful at 152. :-)  Good luck with your VSG.  Good idea gettin this info before you get pregnant.  There arent too many Sleevers that pregnancy is an issue.... so get all the info you can.  Let me know if you have any other questions... :-)  Fyi.. I just posted some pics of pre-pregnancy and I think at 9 weeks pregnant on my profile... if you wanna see what VSG + NO PLASTICS... looks like... :-)  LOL

I can't really help too much with answering your questions as of yet. I am 8 weeks pregnant. I am in a same-sex relationship, so we did artificial insemination and planned this pregnancy. I had my VSG on 8/15/07. I was 295 pounds at my highest weight and I am down to 125 pounds now. We waited until I was almost 2 years post-op before trying to get pregnant. I am on prescription prenatals (Vitafol OB+DHA) and I take supplemental B12. I feel like I have to eat CONSTANTLY. Post-VSG, you are really only supposed to eat 800-1000 calories per day. But, when you are pregnant, you need an additional 300 calories. I've had some morning sickness, so during those times, my diet is crazy...potato chips, bread, pickels...not the optimum post-op diet for sure, but I have to keep eating and keep what I eat down! Some days, though, are really good and I get in all of my protein and don't have a problem. I think the most important advice I can give is get to your goal weight and maintain it for several months. KNOW your body and its limitations with food before trying to get pregnant. I think that will help you immensely! GOOD LUCK!!!

Forgot to mention,I also take 1000 mg of calcium each day, but that's because I am not into milk and I don't think I get nearly enough from food.
