A nuchal translucency measures the amount of fluid at the base of the babies neck. It is supposed to be able to determine chromosomal abnormalities like Down's Syndrome. It a simple ultrasound that is done with some bloodwork from mom.
The NT scan carries a 30% inaccuracy rate. Which means that 30 out of every 100 people get a false result. Normally they will just say "the NT scan was negative" unless it is positive, then they will tell you what for.
Don't stress this. It is optional and most likely unneccessary unless you have a family history of chromosomal problems or are in a high risk group. I opted out of having mine done.
Good luck,
Victoria

i didnt have it done with my daughter, however my mother has had 3 babies with down syndrome that all passed away under the age of 3
my mom said they/she had extra chromosones? not sure will speak to my ob about his
however i too didnt want to know if my daughter would be ok or not, so i didnt have it done
but being these babies are identical twins, the genetic specialist said i should have it done because as a example she gave, if in the later part of ur pregnancy we see the babies are small or one is way bigger than the other, the best idea is to take them out but if they both have downs and they are small its better to leave them in?
im really stressed and confused about all this, i just hope and pray all will work out
thanks for responding so soon

Down's Syndrome is trisomy of the 21st chromosomes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. Trisomy (meaning 3 of the same) or disomy (just one) of a certain chromosome is a severe genetic mutation that reaks havoc on the entire body.
Since your mother gave birth to not just one but three babies with trisomy 21, unfortunately, you are extremely high risk. It does run in families.
I can understand your specialist's take on this as well. Just as long as you are sure you can handle knowing and having that added worry.
Children with down's syndrome and many other genetic abnormalities go on to live amazing lives. Don't let the doctors push you. Unfortunately, they sometimes view these people as mutations and problems to be fixed rather than special. (can you tell I work with them or what? LOL)
Good luck and I will be praying that your babies are perfect in every way!

I'm almost certain I am going to decline testing.
any result won't change any decision regarding keeping the pregnancy. any "bad" result will just stress me out and I don't want/need the added stress.
I declined any testing with kaida.
I did the quad test with jordan because I didn't know any better.

Mandy, Mom to Jordan (5), Kaida (3) and Luken (born 12/5/09) Army wife! HW:351 / SW: 328 / CW:149/ Goal weight...what is that?
I've had them with each of my pregnancies and I'll have one next week as well. (at 12 weeks) My OB doesn't give you an option. It's mandatory in his office regaurdless of age. I'm 26 and shouldn't really be having the test but, that's just the way my OB is. My tests in the past were just fine. I'm sure the one next wee will be the same.
It's not really that big of a deal in my opinion. Just a u/s and blood work.
Good luck!
Ash :)
It was no big deal as far as what they do, just bloodwork and a very cool detailed ultrasound. I wasn't really worried going into it, but overall my general feeling is that I'd rather have known and been prepared if there were a problem. On a side note, I got ultrasounds at every visit, and the one they did with this test was the best one. I got a very good profile view and couldn't believe that someone so tiny could look so human already! Good luck!
