exciting news
As some of you know Obesity problems run in families. I was always the biggest person in my family, but my mother, father, and sister are all obese. My little brother and sister fight weight but are winning the battle! (yay for them) My mother's sister is like 5'2" and hit 300 lbs and then pretty much went on such a strict diect it's basically surgery w/o the surgery. Apparently she has the will power of a god. Both of my grandfathers have died of heart disease, diabetes, metobolic and thyriod problems run in my family... blah blah blah.
Anyways... now that you have a mental picture of my family.... I am the only one to have sought help for my weight problems. My mother's diabetes will end up killing her and I have been trying to talk her into RNY since I had it. Unfortunately, she is still obstinate.
HERE IS THE EXCITING PART
My sister who is 2 years younger than I am came over yesterday and she weighed herself on my scale. She then dissolved into tears. She weighed 287lbs. (which is nothing, I am 2 inches taller than she is and much broader and ended up 415lbs at surgery) She, like myself, has been dieting since she was young and excercises and is just getting no where.
SO...............................
WE HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH HER DOCTOR NEXT WEEK TO START HER ON THE SURGERY PROCESS!!!!!
I am so proud of her for making this decision and am going to support her all the way!
YAY! I just keep thinking about how proud I am of her of taking control of this! I had to share.

That's great news!
Some times it takes people seeing others success and realizing that it might not be their fault that they are in the position that they are in - to make them really want to help themselves. I was one of those people who just had so many things working against me and after years of trying myself to lose the weight and not being successful, was when I decided to receive help.
I'm excited for your sister as I don't know what my life would be like right now if I didn't have my WLS. Please keep us updated on her - I'll keep her in my prayers!

That's awesome for your sister and you and your family! It's so hard to make that step. I also have obese (morbid) members of my family and when I get hyped up about what a miracle WLS is, they view it as preaching and get very mad at me. I finally "gave in" and went for the surgery because nothing else I did worked. It was soooo frustrating. That just goes to show that nobody can make that decision, but the person themself. Good luck to your sister! (I was 287 when I made the decision!)
