OK so...
I know there are a couple of you out there that will ream me for this so have at it but I just found out I am pregnant. I am really happy about it, but I know it could be an issue since I am only 7 months post op. It is really early and I have had a miscarriage before so I am trying not to be too excited, but I am really happy.
So my question is about food. My dietician said that I don't need to up my calories until the 2nd trimester, but I need to make sure I am getting at least 80-90 grams of protein a day. That seems like a lot considering that my protein shakes taste awful to me now. I am hoping some of you out there may have a suggestion or 2 as to how you get this done. Did you increase the number of times you eat per day? Right now I eat 3x per day.
Thanks for your help!

Mommy to 2 of the most beauiful little girls in the whole universe and still in love with my hubby of 8 years. LIFE IS GOOD!
I have lapband so it's a bit different for me. I was told to up my protein to three 30g protein shakes a day. Barf, I know but it is really important for us and the baby to get all that good protein. Of course, take all of your supplements as well. As for the eating, do the best you can. I was so ill that I just ate small portions as frequently as I could keep it down.
Love, Riah
I was 5 months out when I found out I was pregnant - so no reaming here (and I doubt you will get any reaming at all, since there are quite a few women here who were not as far out as recommended.) Anyways - my nut told me to add 100 extra calories the first month, 200 the second, and 300 the third month. After the third month - stay at around 1,300-1,000 calories (I was averaging anywhere from 1,000 - 1,200 calories a day at the time.) I started eating more frequently - because my appetite definitely increased. I always made sure I ate protein with every "meal" - even if it was some string cheese. I never had a problem getting my protein in and never used shakes. So far so good - I'm 7 months with a healthy and active baby boy!
Congrats to you and here's to happy and healthy pregnancy! You've come to the right place!

I got pregnant 4.5 months post op so no reaming here either! :^) I still managed to have a 10.5 lb baby. My surgeon/nutritionist detested protien drinks and made us vow to get our protien thru food. SO, here's what I did:
Eggbeaters and cheese became my good friend - it will up your protien lickity-split!
Add powedered milk to anything that could benefit from it
cheese sticks
lunch meat - like turkey - not bologna (yes, I ate cold lunchmeat even though we weren't supposed to)
Snacked on turkey peperoni slices
I was told to up my calories by 200 starting my 2nd trimester. They baby really doesn't need much. Just make sure you get your water and vitamins in. People in starving countries still manage to have babies, you can do it! :-)
Good luck and congrats!!

Congrats! I was about 6 1/2 months when I found out I was pregnant. I cant do the shakes right now either but tried to find high protein foods to put in. I eat about every 2 hours now. If not I get sick and I cant get in close to enough protein. I added things like shrimp and my all time favorite right now a grilled cheese with tuna and bacon bits half sandwhich. Sounds kind of gross but it sits well and I get about 15-19 grams of protein on half a sandwhich which is all I can eat at a time. I have lost 15 pounds since I got pregnant though so I am eating often and all that I can. I snack in between. I also order a beef stick from online that has 15 grams of protein per one once. It works well for getting in some extra protein. Its a good snack and is easier on my stomach than the shakes right now. I too have had miscarriages. This is my 7th pregnancy and I only have 2 boys at home ages 15 and 10. Just keep thinking positive!!!

COngrats!! I don't think that you'll get reamed here.
You do need to add healthy carbs back in - about 100grams a day - ketosis is bad for the baby so you really want to avoid it. SInce RNY I was told to eat 6 times a day regularly, now well with the morning sickness it is less but that is my goal!!
Best of luck!

Don't worry about the reaming... I got preggo at 7 months too. Congrats and welcome.
About the protein, try the liquid "shots" kinda like taking cough syrup. Way easier to stomach than the shakes right now.
If you continue to lose weight, your OB will probably tell you to up the number of times you eat a day. I am supposed to eat like 6 times a day.
good luck!
