I was bit by a dog today !

I took my dog to the dog park today (I'm too tired to play with her - the dog park is great!).

A dog there jumped up on me and his tooth went into my lip.... so it's not a true "dog bite" but my body was pierced by a dog's tooth.  I bled for a while and my lip is puffy and ugly looking, but not bad enough for stiches.

I know someone else (Paula?) had this happen with her dog....

Should I call my OB?  The dog is vacinated, etc.... but what else is there to consider??

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cindy

You probably should call. Because it peirced a mucus membrane there is a risk of infection. Getting an antibiotic couldn't hurt. When I pregnant with Niko, our former(we had him put down) dog attacked and took a chunk from my chin. It was gross.

Sorry no advice! I just want to say how sorry I am to hear that you had this happen. I think I would probably call my OB just to make sure! I hope it heals fast .

I would call, infection is just not something you want to risk this close to delivery!

I would ask for proof (Vet Records) of the vaccinations, primarily Rabies. People lie all the time about this. We raise/breed/train Registered Australian Cattle Dogs and there are some real "Winners" for dog owners out there.

Hope your lip does a little better. Good luck to you!

Thats just awful. I hope it gets better quick but I would call and let them know. Antibiotics could not hurt.

Animals carry a tremendous amount of bacteria in their mouth, some of which can be very serious.  I think this actually warrants an emergency call to your OB who may very well send you to the ER.

Cindy--

OUCH! You poor thing...that dog piercing your lip must have hurt like hell! Repeat after me: "Bad Dog!"

My dog bit me three weeks ago and it's all healed up. During the bite, two of my dog's incisors pierced  my knee. Although the punctures were small, they were very deep because of the incisors being so long. Although it could have been stitched, no stitches are given for dog bites (when possible), since closing the wound can make it more likely to become infected. I was put on 10 days of Augmentin 875mg. Although I felt fine on it, it did cause a nasty-ass yeast infection. I also took it upon myself to keep the dog bite wound clean, covered in anti-bacterial ointment, and bandaged until it healed.

My advice...since you asked would be to at least notify your OB and ask if anything needs to be done. It's great that you know the dog is up-do-date on shots, etc.

I wish you luck and hope your lip heals quickly.

I'm so sorry Cindy. How terrible - especially in the lip. I say if your doggy can't play nice, don't bring it to the park! I agree with the others......call the doc. Better safe than sorry. I hope you're feeling better soon.
