Kids making fun of names.... your opinion? (long)

I know kids can be mean.  I am finding out it's very difficult to name a baby!

I want a name that won't be mispronounced.
I want a name that is easy to spell.
I want a name without a lot of alternate spellings that my son will have to spell all the time.
I want a name that doesn't scream any particular ethnicity.
I would prefer a name for my son that is not gender neutral.
I would like the name to have meaning.
I do not want a common name (Michael, Nicholas, Thomas, etc).

We have a list going....  Cooper, Sawyer, Hudson, Colgan, etc.

This weekend we went to a Civil War reenactment.  The baby jumped and wiggled when the cannons were fired.  BUT he really loved the Gettysburg Address.  In fact I thought I might go into full-blow labor from the way he was twisting and turning as Abe spoke !!

SO..... a new name arose.  LINCOLN !!!!!!!!!

What do you think?  Our last name is very Polish and starts with a W ....

Being that we live in Illinois (Land of Lincoln) do you think he'll get made fun of more than with any other name?

I was thinking Lincoln Louis (after my grandfather) or Lincoln Anthony (after husband's grandfather)....

Bad idea?

Your thoughts are appreciated!

Cindy

BTW -- even my REALLY picky husband likes Lincoln as he's a huge history buff and was raised with a Civil War enthusiast father.

I don't know if kids really make fun of names anymore.  It seems like everyone has a quirky name and different spellings.  How can they make fun of it, when their names are just as "different"?

I don't know if it's different here in Southern California but I just haven't seen it.

Good luck on a name.  It's horrible trying to find the "perfect" name if you haven't had a name picked out since you were 12.  :)

I am so glad that I am not the only one having a hard time with this!  Everyone around me acts like we are freaks for not having a name at this point.  We just can't decide on one that we both like.  I pretty much have the same requirements that you have for names.  I am having a hard time with first names flowing with our last name, does Lincoln flow with yours?  I say as long as you both like it, go for it.

I just like the nickname "Link" !!  I think it's cute.

We are going with Cooper for a boy's name.  My friend that's a substitute teacher said "oh, Cooper the Super Duper Pooper Scooper"!  Gee, thanks.  I think if kids are that kind of kid, they will make fun of ANY name.  I really like Tucker but hubby vetoed that one just for rhyming reasons also.  :(

I think you should choose a name that works for you.  People are so all over the place anymore, I don't know how you define a "make funable" name anymore LOL.

Personally, I have my own pet peeves about names - I hate the trend of funky spellings and name combos.  Just not my thing.  But it might be someone elses, so who cares what I think anyway LOL.

You look adorable in your picture, btw....and I think Lincoln is quite a fine name :)

No arguments from me...Lincoln is my son's middle name!

I am not alone, neither are you.

I LOVE that name!! Link is a cute nickname too, and...it sounds strong...

I actually just found a website that lets you put in a name and it will give you all the possible nicknames. If I can find it I will post it tomorrow.

Well....here is my opinion...pick what you like and what pleases you because in the end someone will always have something to say about it and will always read something into it. I stressed so much about naming my son that he did not have a name until 2 days after he was born and it was not even one we had considered before. I was so worried my family would not like it or be mad or make fun of it, harsh words were said, but in the end we decided our child, our choice. I think God gave me my answer. My son's name means pillar of strength and confidence. I knew we wanted an Arabic name that was also Muslim, not always one in the same, and did initially want something easy to prounouce and not too out there because I knew he would be here in the U.S. versus Morocco. We had names like Zayn, Rayyan, Noah, Adam but realized picking them for the fact they were easy to say and blended well in American society as you could pronounce them close to if not as an English version. In the end we went with Emad....it is a variation of spelling as it usually is Imad but I knew that would be read as I  MAD and did not want that. We changed it to an E but initally were going to do AY-mad as this is how it is pronounced and the E-MOD has already started. BUT....what can we do. My name is mispronounced, my husbands is and we have all been made fun of a time or two. I plan to instill in my son the value of his name and the meaning and  hope that he will be proud of it and stick up for himself if need be. With ALL that said, I think Lincoln is a great name and if it holds special meaning to you, go for it, may be mispronounced, may give away some of your other rules, but if you are happy with it...go for it!
