I started at 36 weeks(I was part time)...I have not gone back....as of yet and he is almost 8 months old.  I was miserable the last few weeks and couldn't function at all.  I have not gone back and either way they are fine with it...with the economy they really miss my help but it does save them money, so they said whenever/if ever I am ready its cool!  I can't really afford daycare and my husbands schedule is unpredictable at times so I can't just work when he is home.  If we did the daycare thing my check would be mostly a wash as daycare here is CRAZY!!!   My husband who works for the state (WI) got 6 weeks of FMLA, but it was vacation, holiday pay, or sick days that he had to take but he could take them WHENEVER HE wanted no matter what the day!  He can do this until Aethyn's 1st birthday.  We broke up his leave so he would have some fun holidays and vacations with us!

I worked right up until the day before I had my son.
I was feeling great and didn't want to use any of my 12 weeks before I had him.
I have the same goal with this baby.   I'm saving all 12 weeks to use after delivery- God willing!

Ditto to what suzytil said.

I planned to wor****il the Friday before my scheduled Monday c-section but my LO decided to come 2 weeks early. I took 14 weeks off. My company was very cool about the extra 2 weeks...it was all unpaid but well worth it!

Ok couple of questions:

1 - how many employees do you have at your place of business?  That will determine whether or not you are eligible for FMLA.

2 - If you aren't eligible for FMLA, then it's up to you to work something out with your employer.  Generally, you are considered "disabled" at least for short term disability programs for 6 weeks following a vaginal delivery, and 8 weeks for cesarean.  Those are generally accepted guidelines.

3 - FMLA gives you 12 weeks of job protection.  There is no PA law that supercedes FMLA.  FMLA is generally unpaid - but will run concurrently with short term disability in most cases.

Ok now I'll take off my HR hat.  I plan on working as late into the pregnancy as I can to save my paid time for post delivery, since there is salary reduction in our short term disability plan.  I'm going to take a few additional weeks of vacation after the six weeks.  My husband is going to take 12 weeks of FMLA after I go back (his will be unpaid).  I'm the breadwinner so this is a better choice for us.

When I was pregnant with my kids, I worked up until my due date.  I was late with both of them so Im glad I did.

Sharon - There are about 23-25 of us.... I think most of the "real laws" kick in at 50 right?? I could take FLMA but it would be un-paid - my boss is great so they'll work with me. I hope! lol

HI Liz,
How are you feeling?? With me I work partime 4 days a week 6 hrs a day. I went out a week before my scheduled c-section which was 3-4-09 and I just received a letter from my corporate office reminding me that my maternity leaves expires on May 29th. Which was 12 weeks. I do not get any PTO,Sick or vacation time because I am parttime so all the time I have been taken has been without pay. I have to go back on the day or they could fire me unless my boss states a different schedule (that what was in the letter) so the answer to your ques is a took 12 weeks one week before delivery and it will be 11 weeks after. I did have a c- section also.
NO I am not looking forward to going back only because of babysitting issues . Well we will see what happens. My husband is away in Washington is week for Police Week and I am about ready to go back FULL Time right about now!!! I am typing with Alaina screaming in my arms right now she is a colicy baby:) Take Care and hope anything is going great with your pregnancy.

When I was pg with my son, 10 years ago, I worked up until a week AFTER my due date. I did start working 1/2 days a few weeks before that, due to abdominal pains. At that job I had Short Derm Disability pay that paid like 60%. I had to use some of that for the 1/2 days.

At my current job, we don't have short term disability, or any Paid Maternity Leave, so I'd imagine I'd work up until I couldn't any more, and then I can use Sick, Personal, and Vacation time.  Kinda sucks that I cannnot take ANY time off now if I want to make sure I'm paid for a full 8 weeks. Yes, FMLA (if it applies) protects your job, but it doesn't Pay anything- at least not here.

Hope this helps!  Hopefully they will give you good time off paid.

I went out last Friday, 5/8/09, at 1 day shy of 38 weeks.  Glad I did, because starting Monday, I'm dragging hiney, tired all the time, moody as hell, and one big, crabby, hormone driven, *****y contraction.  Oh, and I've come down with a lovely case of pregnancy rash.. so at least I can be at home itching in private, instead of sitting in my office with everyone popping in to ask how I'm doing.

I'm in CA, so I have the same options listed above by Dawn.  I plan on doing my SDI/FMLA then my baby bonding time.. then when I go back, hubby is going to take his baby bonding, to extend the time before we need daycare.  I think when mine is all added up, I'm actually not due bac****il almost September.. then hubby will be able to do Sept/Oct.. and by then, I'll have another couple weeks of vacation time built back up, and can cover the holidays (which is his busy time), with some help from my brother (who is our roommate/full time student), with her daycare.

Hi! I just wanted to say congratulations to you on your pregnancy! I've been lurking on this board for months trying to get tips and advice!!

I can't beleive that you get such a short maternity leave in the US! In the Uk you are entitled to 52weeks of maternity leave of which you are entitled to pay. I haven't had a baby yet, but a friend of mine just has, and she worked up to the 38th week so she could have more time off after with the baby. She has 52 weeks off now, and is paid statutory materity pay (based on your wages) for 40 of those 52 weeks, although she can go back to work before the 52 weeks are up if she chooses.

Good luck with your pregnancy and the baby! I'm hoping I won't be too far behind you! Just gotta wait til July for my year surgivrsary and my surgeon says we're good to go!
