Topic: Has anyone with PCOS not lost weight after WLS?
Hi - New here and going through posts, but thought I would ask the one that is my biggest fear... what if I don't lose weight?  My history is PCOS + hyperthyroid + adrenal fatigue = weight gain.  I've exercised, take metformin, took the saying "eat less and lose weight" too far and had to work with a dietician for several months to learn how to feel hungry and not feel such guilt about eating.  My eating habits are good, all the work with the surgeon's office to practice eating like I'll need to after surgery has been easy since it's what I've been doing for a while.  But my fear is this - if I already restrict my diet, will WLS help?  Planning on VSG since I want to avoid malabsorption (during my not-eating phase, I had some nutritional issues and am afraid it would be very easy to slip into that again) and surgeon feels like it's a good fit with what I've already done.  Surgeon and PA say that everyone worries that they'll be the one who doesn't lose weight... has everyone here lost weight after surgery?

I'm 5'9", 250lbs.  Thanks :)

PCOS didn't count for my insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield) but the underlying insulin resistance was considered diabetes by my surgeon.  That plus high cholesterol (treated by meds) make up my 2 qualifiers.

My surgery is March 15. Thanks for your answers.  I want off Metaforim.  There has to be a cure to this thing. I have already had 4 kids and my tubes are tied.

Topic: RE: pcos and wls

I have PCOS and had realize lap band surgery DEC 09, I have lost 120lbs and even after all that weight loss I still have the exact same symptoms as before. I found out recently after stopping my bcp in the effort to try to have my first child. I stopped my bcp in Oct last year and in a matter of 2 months or so I gained 25lbs without doing anything different. I had been able to maintain my weight loss for 2 years with no problems so I knew something was going on so I went to see my doctor and she said that bcp's are a treatment for pcos well then it all made sense to me. I have the insulin's resistance and that makes your body turn that extra insulin's in to fat so once I talked to my doc and had some blood work I was put on metformin to help control everything. I started out at 500mg 2 times daily and now I am taking 500mg 4 times daily. I have been on them for about 3 weeks at the lower dose and just started the new dose so I will share as times goes on what good happens. But to answer your question wls did not make my pcos go away and if it did there wouldn't be a support group here I guess. So weight may be a factor but it certainly isn't the only factor. Have you already had surgery?

Topic: Metformin after surgery
I am awaiting surgery. Pretty sure I'm going with VSG. I currently take 1000mg metformin a day.  I have a lot of GI side effects from it.  Was wondering if the side effects of the metformin were worse after surgery or the same?

My Sleeve Doc told me that PCOS and Obesity is a symptom of each other and that PCOS goes away with weight loss.  Have you found that to be the same?

Topic: What were some signs that you had PCOS?
Hey everyone. I just had my consult a few weeks ago with my doctor (required by insurance...he orders tests to be done, asks questions etc) ...he looked at my stomach, commented on my stretch marks and told me that he needs to test em for PCOS and other things and said I will probably have difficulty getting pregnant....weird huh? As far as he knew, there was no reason to assume such things but...

....I didn't tell him that I have been bleeding nonstop since December 22nd. It worrys me ...but I keep thinking its due to weight gain over the last year. I went from 245-325 in about 1.5 years. Went from 270-325 in about 8 months. It sucks...but I'm the type not to go to the doctor for things i can live with (I know it's bad...just a phobia, I suppose)

Well anyways, I have the blood test tomorrow to find out, but I was just curious if something like this was a sign?

Thanks guys.

Topic: RE: A Quick Question...
I was told at 17 that I had PCOS and that I would have a very hard time getting pregnant if I did at all.  I was lucky enough to get pregnant once.  Then in 04 I had rny done.  Now here is where it gets crazy!  I still didnt have a normal period, maybe 1  year.  My daughter told me I was pregnant in 07.  Had him, 7 months later I go in because I was so tired.  Doctor looks at me and says, Here, call OB.  Mallie was born in 09.  THEN 5 months later my daughter tells me again that I am pregnant.  My last one was born in 2010.  Mind you, I NEVER had a period during this time. lol  Now here is the kicker.  I had my tubes tied because my doctor told me that I would die and so would the child if I got pregnant again.  Now, I have a period every other month.  Go figure. lol   Good luck.  Oh yeah, all three boys were born after I turned 30.
