Topic: RE: Post op period problems
my periods had been coming every 35 days with my weight loss, right up until surgery (actually was due the week of surgery) that was 2 weeks ago and still no period. My RE has me on provera to induce a cycle, but I only have to take it if my cycle goes over 90 days. I hope it comes on it's own an my body is just adjusting to the stress of surgery. I noticed my weight is up a pound which to me usually means a cycle in imminant in a week or two.

Sorry for posting late...and I'm sorry for your loss. IF you decide to get pregnant again I would recommend having your progesterone levels monitored AND possibly taking metformin...I miscarried in 2001...hadn't had my IR diagnosed yet and didn't realize progesterone levels are notoriously low for PCOSers...but required for pregnancy...I had a successful pregnancy in 2005 while on metformin and took progesterone supplements until my levels stabilized at a healthy level to support the fetus...now my amazing 6 1/2 year old daughter. Best of luck to you in the future!

First I've got to tell you I've read your blog and you are such an inspiration! Thanks for sharing your journey! I haven't had surgery yet but I'm 18 years into coping with PCOS and Zovia has been my life saver! I tried ortho tri about 5 years ago and it was like miracle grow for my cysts...and I'm currently waiting on the 3rd month of my gianvi (generic Yaz) to complete so I can switch back to Zovia! The Yaz has been a nightmare for me personally...4 weeks of bleeding...so not acceptable...Best of luck with getting this all straightened out! It's such a headache!
Topic: RE: Metformin after Surgery
I was officially diagnosed with PCOS at age 15 following an exploratory surgery where my GYN held my ovaries and saw the multitude of cysts...I'm 33 now so you can imagine all the changes I've seen with how this syndrome is treated. My current PCP also has PCOS, so she's always on top of the latest and greatest:) We just did a NMR LIPOPROFILE blood test...from the name you'll gather this is primarily a cholesterol type screening...however, this test can also measure your level of insulin resistance...so you can have that test ran and compare your results as you loose. That's why we pulled mine...it's relatively new and not all labs process it...I live in Iowa and we shipped my blood from the hospital I work at to the Mayo Clinic in MN for processing...but now we have a good measuring stick for my insulin resistance:) Hope this helps! Best of luck to us all! I am hoping to have surgery this August or Sept! Currently traveling through the appropriate hoops:)

Great!! That makes me hopeful. I was just afraid I'd have to work as hard as before surgery to lose weight afterwards. Does that make sense?

I am a little rusty in my knowledge of PCOS and IR as I did do ALOT of reading in 2006 when I was first diagnosed but that was 6 years ago :)
PCOS can go away. It's a hormone imbalance and losing weight can cause your hormones to become balanced. The issue with PCOS is that it's sort of a negative diagnosis - if you have certain symptoms with no other reason then you are told you have PCOS.
My nurse in the hospital gave me a study that showed that almost all the symptoms of PCOS (hair growth, cysts on ovaries, irregular periods, insulin resistance. etc) go away after weight loss surgery.
If you can tolerate metformin after surgery then great. I would imagine it would help your body to lose weight faster anyways.

Whoa, I'm not experiencing that, but thought I'd recommend the nuva ring. It's a little ring that you insert for 3 weeks and then remove for 1 week. Because it doesn't go through the digestive tract, you supposedly absorb it better. I used to go over a year without a period and when I got them they were very heavy and lasted for about 10 days. Since RNY I've been getting them about every 45 days and the first few were very heavy, but the most recent ones weren't too bad and only lasted about 3-4 days. I know PCOS manifests itself differently for everyone but like the other person said, I would seriously consider seeing a differnt GYN if this continues. It sounds like hell!

My dr took me off metformin after surgery too. I could not lose weight prior to surgery although metformin helped me not gain. I have lost 15lbs since surgery 2 weeks ago...
Topic: RE: Metformin after Surgery
I was taking 2000mg metformin daily and my surgeon told me to discontinue after surgery. I've never had issues with blood sugar, just insulin resistance, so I also question discontinuing it. My gyn told me that PCOS won't go away -- it's hormone related -- but that weight loss will help the insulin resistance. So I guess I don't have anything of value to add except I'm with you on the question!!

Did you have a hard time loosing weight before surgery? I do. I can diet and exercise and my weight barely moves. I think the metformin seems to help a little. How are you loosing after surgery? I'm hoping I lose quicker after the surgery.
