Hi! I was diagnosed with PCOS when i was 12 (now 26) by age 17 they told me i would only ever adopt because i was in menopause (My levels are now the same as a 60 yr old!) Anyways, I took the metformin and got very ill from it due to being allergic to it, but my dr kept me on birth control pills and i ended up pregnant 4xs on it. Once a year I was pregnant, 1 i was pregnant with twins lost one at 4 months and one at 5 months, my 2nd pregnancy I was put on bed rest almost immediately and after almost losing him 3xs through out the 9 months, I have a beautiful 4 year old little boy. My 3rd pregnancy i was 21 weeks and my 4th i was 23 weeks. I dont know if Metformin would of helped cut the risk down but i do know with PCOS its a lot easier to get pregnant on Birth Control pills.
I have taken Diane 35 for 12 years now to help with PCOS symptoms such as Hirsutism and acne. Because I had such heavy and painful periods, I was told it was ok to take Diane 35 non-stop if I wanted to. So for 10 years I did just that. A few years ago, i thought maybe I would stop taking Diane 35 at the end of one box to see what would happen with my period. It started...and was very heavy and did not stop - for 4 weeks I was still having my period! I went to the gyno, and after tests, was told I have a few small Fybroids. My choices were to deal with the non-stop bleeding, Surgery (not recommended for small ones) or go back to using Diane 35 to control the symptoms. Now I am in the pipeline to have roux en y. If I have to stop Diane 35, I will be in agony from cramps and not allowed midol or advil which was my "go to" drug for menstral cramps. I would also have to put up with non-stop periods that would cause me to lose more iron than a post-op should deal with. I have also heard on the news lately, that Diane 35 was banned in France because of studies that found it causes heart attacks. I am 47 years old and my husband has a very low sperm count so I have never needed "birth control". What do you think I should do?
I've battled PCOS since college. All the symptoms. I chose the sleeve because I was very fearful of the malabsorption long term. The weight is coming off but more slowly than others. I'm ok with that. The hardest thing to realize was the carbs of any kind completely derail my weight loss. My insulin resistance was really high. But I craved carbs all the time!
A friend started taking a product call Plexus Slim that was designed for diabetics to help normalize blood sugar. She said it took her cravings for sweets away and made her want to eat less. It's all natural and doesn't interfere with meds so I thought I would try it. And my surgeon looked it over and said he was fine with it.
Holy moly, I loved it! It's just a drink packet you put in your water each morning. Within 3 days my cravings for carbs was gone without all the withdrawl symptoms. I already had the restriction from surgery to help with the eating less but I'm serious- the cravings were gone.
I've had about 20% more weight loss each month that I've been using it. I've been on it since July. Last month my doctor ran all my blood work again. My insulin resistance numbers were NORMAL!! My cycles are normal for the first time in 20 years without being on birth control. It's crazy!
If you are struggling with PCOS and weight loss, you might try it. It's easy to use. Give it a try! Here's the link http://michellenickell.myplexusopportunity.com
I was diagnosed with PCOS in February of 2006. I was put on metformin at that time and was able to lose 30 pounds. I got pregnant in July of 2006. I had been trying for over 3 years at that point.
I read a lot about metformin and clearly remember the research showing that it can cut the risk of miscarriage because it helps regulate our hormones.
I have no idea if I had low progesterone or not but for me I believe the small weight loss and metformin allowed me to get pregnant.
Hope this helps.

There are other methods - condoms, diaphragm, sponge to name a few. I hear you about the long bleeding - had bleeding for over a year while low carbing. I imagine it can be the same with any weight loss if you have PCOS. Not looking forward to that part at all :-(
I would ask your family doctor to refer you to a gynecologist familiar with VSG for more information on the risks and options available to you. Not sure how old you are now but if you are sure you are finished with pregnancy you could go the tubes tied/vasectomy route. Let us know how it goes...
Have you tried adding metformin and diane-35? Those were really helpful with my hair issues. As for the missed periods, nothing really worked. And if I do lose even a little weight I get non-stop spotting until I eat normally again. It is the pits :-(
Were you happy with your weight loss? I have heard it is just as effective for PCOS women as for non-PCOS.
I even joined this forum just so that I could reply to your request for a success story!
My success was so muchthat I was asked to be interviewed on national television! ( I declined)
My PCOS allowed me to ovulatemaybe twice a year, excess facial hair, diffiiculty losing weight, the works. After I married, the surprise, occassional ovulatory cycle surprised us with the pregnancy of our first child! but then secondary infertility reared its ugly head. No ovulation for three years, RE consults, clomid without success, then shots brought a quadruplet pregnancy ( not our desired outcome!). only two survived their extreme prematurity, but thats a story for a different website!
then I had RNY gastric bypass, lost 137 lbs, started OVULATING on my own, and here I am 13 years later, and went on to have FIVE MORE HEALTHY PREGNANCIES, my periods are somewhat regular, kept weight off ( of course some up and down through those pregnancies, but am back down to mylowest weight)
.... so depending on what you call success, I would say my story is one! I'm thrilled with the secondary benefits ofsurgery and its help withmyPFOS symptoms. Best if luck to you!
You give me hope! Thank you so much for your success story. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 6.5 years w no luck. I have PCOS & am only 10 days post-op. Really needed to see a positive story. Thanks again!
Also, did you get pregnant on Metformin only or did you use something along with it? How many cycles did it take you to conceive?
