Topic: RE: Help!! PCOS - denied WLS - working on appeal
Hi,

I noticed your post.  I was wondering if you could forward me a copy of your appeal letter.  I tried to have surgery about 18 months ago and was denied because it was excluded.  My company still refuses to add it to our policy.  But, I checked and the only wording I see on my benefits policy is an exclusion for 'Weight loss program".  It doesn't say anything about surgery.

Any advice you can give me, I would greatly appreciate!!!

Thank you,

Topic: RE: pcos after RNY ????

Hello, I am 2 days away from my RNY, and very excited. I have PCOS, and am the picture of it! I have diabetes, had infertility, and in Dec 2008, had a hysterectomy and found out that  I had stage 1 adenocarcinoma of the endometrium. My OB-Gyn told me that when periods are missed, and estrogen is not opposed by progersteron, that cancer can occur. I am only 50! Be sure to keep this in mind, and find out all you can to protect yourselves-PCOS is to be respected! doxiwoman ps. please say a prayer for me on Oct. 29, thanks

Topic: RE: Cramps
I had surgery in 2004.  I lost 160 lbs.  Prior to surgery I did not have regular periods without bc pills.  Then the cramps were nothing to really speak of.  Post surgery the  cramps have become painful and the moodiness... I guess I get the whole nine yards of PMS now.  I cannot take any NSAIDS.

Tylenol makes a wonderful product that is an incredible secret!  It is call Tylenol for Women.  It comes in a little purple bottle.  I have to have the pharmacist special order this product.  I won't start a period with out it!  I typically order two bottles at a time to make sure I don't run out!  You may not find that all pharamcist can order this product. It does exist.  It works wonders for me.  It takes away the cramps, irritability, the back ache.  I usually only take it for two days and then I can handle it all.

Not that you totally want to know, but the same thing happened to me 3 days out. And I am SO used to not having periods, that I at first thought I was having a post-op complication! It took me a few minutes to realize that I was doing something ... gasp ..... normal! Also, I have been having them at about 30 day intervals since then. Very weird! But it sure is a welcome change.

Topic: RE: My pcos

My personal opinion here -- with PCOS I think a procedure that changes your physiology is better than a band. If you consider the band, I would seriously look at the  VSG as an alternative. Especially if you have food cravings since the ghrelin will decrease with VSG. I hear bands don't affect your hunger level that much and that you can still be hungry hungry hungry. But I'm sure this is a very individual thing.

RNY could also be a good choice for PCOS since you might dump on sugar (I don't, but I still don't like to eat a lot of it). Since my RNY, simple carbs like breads and pastas are not as appealing as they used to be.

I don't know enough about DS to comment on it with re:PCOS.

VSG to me seems like a really nice compromise between band and DS, at least in my mind. (Others will feel differently, I imagine.)

FWIW, I got RNY, but VSG was a close second.

The previous poster is right.  PCOS is much more than just not having a period.  It's an endocrine disorder that effects more than just fertility and those types of hormones.  It also effects insulin & glucose.  I too suggest seeing an Endocrinologist and maybe starting Metformin to help get the insulin under control as insulin resistance is VERY common in PCOSers.  GL with your upcoming surgery too!

Oh...and another good website to check out is www.soulcysters.com GL!

I used to have my period becasue I was on birthcontrol... I stop birthcontrol and my period disapear again.... please Google PCOS.. and get information about this is very important you know what can cause and what can you do to prevent some of the side effects.....

SHE SAID I SHOULD SEE AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST FOR TREATMENT ANYBODY KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS...I JUST THOUGHT IT MEANT I DONT GET MY PERIOD SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM. SHE SAID THE TREATMENT MIGHT CAUSE ME TO LOOSE WEIGHT SO I SHOULD CHECK INTO THAT BEFORE SURGERY BUT MY SURGERY DATE IS NOV 17TH. DO YOU THINK IT'S WORTH IT??

Topic: Personal Genome Project @ Harvard free/study
*Personal Human Genome @ Harvard Univ* free
Hello all. I seen this on my local news this morning. I thought I would share it. This is a great way to ward off those horrible genetic abnomialies. This is a free study, all they ask is that your info will be shared for the good of mankind. I left my info/registered.

Introducing the Personal Genome Project

Human genome sequencing is opening new doors in medical research, but it has also raised difficult ethical questions, particularly about patient privacy. HMS professor of genetics George Church is keeping such concerns in mind as he pushes forward with the Personal Genome Project (PGP). Church and his colleagues have already sequenced the protein-coding regions of 10 human genomes, and have been given the green light to sequence 100,000 more. Ethicist Jeantine Lunshof, PGP director of community Jason Bobe, and PGP participant John Halamka share their thoughts.
