Having WLS then gaining weight

Alright, so I've done all I can as far as finding somebody to talk to about this. My mother worked with a lady 6 or so years ago that has a daughter a couple years older than me that was diagnosed with PCOS and had RNY a year or so after she was diagnosed. I shortly after her got diagnosed (or whatever) by the same Dr shortly after her.

Anyway, she is like maybe 5 years or so out of having RNY. I am currently 2 and a 1/2 years out. My lowest weight was 170 last July. Seriously after July I slowly started watching the scale go up and up now I am up to 225 (so I was not at 170 but for maybe a month). I have been going to the gym 5X's a week for 1hour. I have not lost a pound. I did do the 5 day pouch test and lost like 3 or 4. But I thought that going from basically not working out, to working out 5x's a week for an hour I'd see SOMETHING, either in my clothes or on the scale. But nothing. I have been going consistenly for the past 5 weeks now (elliptical, recumbent bike and treadmill on an incline). I know I could do better on my choice of foods, and my Dr's nurse said if I want to drop the weight like before RNY that I should go down to 3-4oz meals (70protein/30veggie). I need to be more consistent with eating healthier, etc. But still, why am I not seeing SOMETHING, ANYTHING? I've basically come here for a cry for help. There has to be somebody that has had this happen to them or something simular. Anybody???? Thanks!

Sadly I am experiencing the same thing.

I lost 180lbs.  Had RNY  almost 9yrs ago.  Just had 3babies in the last 4yrs.  (youngest is 6months).  I have been going crazy because I have been so focused on getting the scale numbers to move down.  I gained 20lbs with each baby.  But ever since my last baby was born I've been gaining 1-2lbs a week.  This is not normal, when I have been excercising hard and eating within pouch quidelines.

Just this weekend I suddenly have sharp pain on my lower right side.  I will be calling my ob immediately.  Because I have been rolled up in a ball all weekend, it suddenly hit me.  PCOS may be coming back with a vengence!  I hadn't had a problem with it since I orginally lost over 100lbs.  Now that I have re-gained 75lbs, and the weight isn't budging.  It totally makes sense to me know.  Anyhow I'm not sure what kind of treatment there is after WLS.  Birthcontrol?  Metformin?  I did those 10yrs ago.  But now that I think about it I have all the PCOS symptoms right now...  why didn't I notice it before?  I just hope that this is the right answer.  That I can get help, pain relief, hormones and insulin under control.  And then begin again to lose weight.

Just know you aren't alone.  Any regain after WLS feels like a failure.  Even when its for good reasons as having a baby.  Once the baby is out.  Bad self mind-talk can really take a tool when there is a lot of weight to lose.  Just don't give in to the thought that you are doomed or that you are failing, because of no self control.  I know that simply isn't true.

I hope we get out of this re-gain storm soon.  <3

Well that is good to know somebody is in the same boat as me, well kinda. LOL I don't have a good excuse. Maybe just a good old case of self sabotage? Anyway, I also noticed the PCOS symptoms after putting this weight back on. I will never say that I feel RNY cured me of PCOS. My face was a little more cleared up, but I still had zits. And seemed as thought I was getting my period every month and even getting positive opk's every month too. Well that surely enough has stopped. Seems like I am broke out all the time and I have been taking something called Vitex to try to get me on a regular cycle. I have been having AF maybe every 2 months. *sigh* I wish we were all lucky enough to not have PCOS and struggle with all the freaking bull**** that comes along with it.
Anyhow, good luck to you on getting the weight off. I'm hoping to get control of myself and cut everything and anything bad out. Ugh. *hugs* Jules

Jan will be 8 years post-op roux-en-y for me.  I was 244 the day I had the surgery.  I got down to 118 and felt better than I ever had in my life.  I slowly began to put weight on until I was up to 162.  I went on a low-glycemic "diet" and got down to 126.  I got pregnant with my third (first post-op) and developed gestational diabetes, so was very careful to eat low GI during the pregnancy.  I was 162 when I delivered my healthy baby boy.  I soon reached 126 and stayed there for a year until I weaned him.  I instantly put on 10 pounds.  Then I had a hysterectomy 3 months later, and put on another 10 pounds.  Up, up, up went my weight, and down went my energy - and my motivation.  My baby will be 3 yrs old Christmas Eve, and I am currently 156.  I began to workout again today, and am praying that I can get back to at least 130, but nothing seems to be doing it for me.  I can easily put 10 pounds on in a week.  I'm very discouraged, but am trying to put some positive affirmations before me again . . . . and get back to not letting food control me.  But I SO enjoy eating.  So please know . . . . it is sometimes a daily struggle for me.  I don't want to go anywhere, my clothes do not fit, and my lack of motivation makes me discouraged.  However, I did it once, and can do it again - and so can you :)

I have had the same issues so I went an visited a endocrinologist for the answer. I have been having horrible hypoglycemic episodes almost on a daily basis. I couldn't take it anymore. After one day I was watching this show called "Work Out" and the personal trainer was saying that you must balance your blood sugar cause once you are hypoglycemic and you eat, its stored as fat cause in a sense your body is saying store the food cause its a signal like it is starving. Its a fight or flight mechanisim. After a year and a half after my RNY it started happening and that is when my weight started going up. At first it wasn't alot but soon and over time I gained more. I started at 278 and got down to 136 and now I am at 198. I couldn't get this hypoglycemia under control.
So recently I went to an endocrinologist and she ran a bunch of blood work, including a thyroid panel and a glucose tolerance test. Anyway, my thyroid panel was completely normal, but my glucose test came back abnomal..sort of. I was normal and then I bottomed out to a 43 which is not good. I have been as low as 25. I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia. I have insulin resistance. She explained this to me and it made sense. My pancreas is working normally so when I eat, it releases insulin like its suppose to do. Well my cells that are suppsose to accept the insulin is like a egg shell and the insulin cannot enter into the cell and has no where to go. So instead fat cells readily accept the insulin resulting in weight gain. So what happens when the insulin is in my blood stream doing nothing, its lowering my blood sugar causing me to become hypoglycemic.
Anyway, she put me on Metformin and is having me gradually increase it. I am up to 3 times a day starting tomorrow. I started at once a day. One thing I have noticed is that I have not had barely any hypoglycemic episodes. It may be the reason why people will lose weight on it. I think this may be my answer. Its 3 weeks tomorrow I have been on it. So time will tell, but seeing this happen when I always had daily episodes of it and be almost completely gone is awesome! So I have high hopes on losing weight!
I hope you find your answer and if its anything like mine you may want to talk to your doc.
