Metformin - What's your dosage?

Hi everyone...

I haven't been on the boards for a really long time and I wasn't active on this one. I had Lapband in October and I am down 70 pounds with another 100 pounds to go until my ultimate goal and a perfect BMI...

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2006 when I completely STOPPED having periods. I have had all of the symptoms and according to my blood tests my LH levels are completely opposite of what they should be. My OBGYN put me on 500mg of Metformin a day and I was on it for 3 months with no luck. I asked to increase my dosage and she then gave me extended-release 500mg  that she said are equivalent to 1000mg with less side effects. I really only had side effects the first two weeks anyway.

I have now been on the extended release tabs for 2 months and no sign of a period. What is your dosage level? I have heard of women getting up to 2500mg a day before they get their cycles....and my dr is refusing to increase my dosage. Should I go to a different doctor? I want to have a child so desperately!!!

Thank you for your help...

Currently I'm taking 850mg 2 times a day with it I also take 100mg of Spiriton and brith control. I haven't been off of the birth control since I was diagnosed so i'm not sur ewhat my cycle would be like. Before treatment i'd have it maybe 3-4 times a year and just before being diagnosed I was having 26-30 day period when it did come.

Apparently my hormone level are perfect but every now and then my insulin levels increase to the high 20's-30 range when it should be 21. I have never found that the metformin has helped me with weight loss, some people have great results on it.

I'm on the waiting list for surgery now and my surgeon figures it will be sometime in the next 4 months. I so hope that loosing this weight will increase my  chances of become pregnant.

Good Luck and beware if you increase your doage your tummy isn't gonna like you.

You can either believe it will happen.....or believe it won't.  Both are self fulfilled prophesies. For Me it has happened.  My Surgery was September 21/2010

Sadly Metformin never worked for me.  At one point I was up to six pills a day (3000mg) and I was still not having periods and my digestion was a nightmare.  For some people Metformin is a miracle drug, but it seems to be quite individual.

I take 750mg twice a day.  I am currently trying to get pg and luckily my periods have been really normal considering I am almost 43 lol.  I also only had the side effects for like 2 weeks.  I would think you probably need some proveria to "make" you have a period and then hopefully you can get some kind of normal cycles back.  Best of luck and baby dust to you!

I'm on 500 3x/day. I don't have a period either. I used to take BCP to force it, but I decided not to when I turned 35.

I am currently on 2000mg of Fortamet (Metformin)

It was my understanding that extended release meds weren't effective on RNY and DS. And Fortamet is the extended release version of metformin. Something abouth the coating on the pill that makes it extended release doesn't allow it to be absorbed by those who have malabsorbed tracks.
