new here, PCOS confirmed..now the questions
I PCOS was just confirmed. I didn't want the meds..but now am retinking that. I had the VSG 3/1/10.
I have lost 60 lbs. (10 pre-op). Now my body is holding onto every pound!!! it can easily take me a week to lose a pound. I am hoping that some metformin will help me lose. I went from a 22/24 to a 20/22. It seems like I should have dropped another size by now...just very frustrated. How do the dr.s decide on what dosage to give??? How will I know if It needs to be higher....I really want to lose the most in my honeymoon period. that is why I am stressing so much about this. Please help!
Thank you all for your support! -Jess

I think I am about to be in that same situtation, but my dr started me at 1000mg, but the first week was 500mg, becasue Metformin will mess up your tummy for a while. Just before surgery I was at 2000mg, and that was hard, so will see what happens after my drs visits next week.
The dr will look at your labs to see how high your testosterone level is, but from what I understand 1000mg-2000mg is typical.

PCOS has many tests to diagnose:
u/s of your ovaries to see if there are any cysts
bloodwork: LH/FSH ratio, estrogen, testosterone levels(few tests for these), prolactin levels and glucose tolerance test
also monitoring your cycles to see if u ovulate or not and to see how long the cylce is and how many periods u have etc..
if it is PCOS, our bodies HATE carbs or LOVE it however u want to see it but really our bodies take carbs and turn it into stored fat..so limit the carbs and try for lots of protein
good luck

When i was first diagnosed I was started on 500mg of metformin 2 times a day and it seemed to help lower my insulin levels and then around x-mas they spike to 248, the normal ratio should be 20 so my Dr. called and uped my dose to 850 twice a day. Holy tallk about getting sick, my tummy constantly hurt and for almost a week i had sever diarrhea but after that my body adjusted again.
Along with the metformin I also take 100mg of spirtone and birth control. I am hoping that by having weight lost surgery it will help with the pcos and increase my chances of having a baby in the future.
Good Luck.

You can either believe it will happen.....or believe it won't. Both are self fulfilled prophesies. For Me it has happened. My Surgery was September 21/2010
I have had PCOS for 20 + years. I was on Medformin for all of those years. After 12 years on it I started to have stomach and bowel issues. I started off at 500 and ended up with 1500. I had the RYN so I do not know if it is normal to have stalls and at what point for the VSG. I think my first stall happened around the 6-8 week out. I am goin through a big stall now, I am at my lowest weight since I got married 19 years ago. I think you are doing well, keep it up and try not to stress about it.
