Hey ladies! I have a question about WLS and PCOS. My main concern is not loosing weight after surgery. I have jumped through all the hoops and not I've got my date (May 17, 2010) and through all of the Dr. apts and Psych evaluation and all that, my concern have been not loosing weight after the surgery. I've read alot on this forum and looked at alot of the ladies profiles that have posted on the PCOS thread and most all of them seem like they've lost plenty of weight. Still I have the fear of my own success. I've dieted and exercised like crazy throughout my teen and adulthood and now I am praying for my success with this.
If you girls with PC OS could tell a lil bit of your stories maybe a beginning weight and how much, in how long, it took you to loose your weight after your surgery.
I'm starting at about 375 5'10" and my goal is 160 (but anything under 200lbs would make me sooo happy)  Even to just take off 100 lbs too would help, But I'd feel terrible for anything under say, 75lbs you know.

I had RNY surgery 12/16/2010.  I'm 5'11".  I had a starting weight of 380lbs.  I was 348 lbs the day of surgery.  This week I'm down to 277 lbs.  That's 103 lbs down from my highest weight.    I've had PCOS for over 17 years.  My weight would only go up and up, no matter what I did.  Since surgery, I have more energy to do what I want. I exercise about 2 hours a day, 5 days a week.

This surgery will force you to eat smaller meals.  PCOS caused me to eat a lot.  The surgery forced me to change my ways.  I too was worried that I would not lose much weight.  As long as you remain focused and still to your doctors plan, you will be successful.

I am close to 3 years post op and I can tell you I for one had no issues with slow or no weightloss. As of last week I am down 172 pounds from my heaviest. I am maintaining my weightloss and loving my RNY!!

I think we all had/have fears in the beginning of "what if this doesn't work for me" the thing you have to remember is WLS is a tool it is all in how you use it!

All the best!!

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!

I had gastric bypass surgery March 31, 2010.  I lost 13 pounds before the surgery and 12 after the surgery.  I am down 25 pounds and feeling soooo good.  I am still tired since the surgery but I actually have to remind myself to eat and try hard to get all my protein in.  So far it is the best decision I ever made.  I has only been 2 weeks since my surgery.

This surgery will work for you and you will feel so different.  I know it is early for me but I can feel the changes.  Good Luck with all and don't worry.  You worked hard to get this far, now go all the way and you will be happy.

I had RNY on 2/25/2010.  I lost 32 lbs. before surgery and 12 lbs. the first 2 weeks after surgery.  However, as soon as I advanced my diet to add "crispy and crunchy" things like kashi cereal mixed with yogurt, crackers with tuna salad on them, milk with protein drinks, apple with pb, etc. -- very healthy options the dietician suggested -- my weight loss completely fell off.  I only lost 5 lbs. over the next 5 weeks.  No matter what I did, my weight loss did not come back.

I eliminated anything that would be considered carbohydrate based and my weight loss has miraculously started up again.  The dietician I am working with says she has never encountered someone who is so carb sensitive.

I am still quite early from surgery -- just under 8 weeks.  But I know my body and I was someone with PCOS who did not eat enough calories to sustain my body weigh.  I had RNY because I hoped it would give me positive metabolic results along with weight loss.

At this point I'm on the fence.  I did stop metformin about 3 days before surgery.  In hindsight, I don't know if this was the best tactic.

I don't know that anyone has a really good idea of the metabolic impact of this surgery for some.  I haven't found a lot of knowledge or support from my surgeon and staff.

Thanks Everyone for your input!

Kara: I have the thought that you did about my calorie intake not being enough to explain the weight that I carry around (380 highest) and it definitely don't explain my 100 lb weight gain in less than one year!  I know I'm far from a post WLS diet but I usually eat less than half of whatever I serve my husband, plus we rarely do to fast food and what not, ALOT less often than when I was a single woman. I know I would be a chubby girl by the way I eat but definitely not almost 400lbs!

Oh well I've completed all the requirements and have my date, I guess I can try it and see what happens. I've tried everything else. Plus seeing and hearing all the positive stories for all the PCOSers on here is really encouraging!

I started at 288, this morning I was 170.
Sept will be 4 years.
I lost slowly in comparison to other people posting on the site at the time.
I still would like to be closer to 150, but I would take 170 over 288 ANY DAY and twice on Sunday!

I would lose 1-2 lbs for someone else's 6. It sucked to lose slowly but it did come off and I have not gained it back. I'm careful for the most part about my diet and I've found that if the scale screeps up a little, it is easier to drop down a few lbs that it was before surgery.

You will lose about 70% or your excess weight because of surgery, the other 30% will be about how you eat, how much you excerise.

I was pertrified of the surgery not "working" but it will for about 70%, the rest you have to put in!

Good luck sweetie! You won't regret it!

I know someone with PCOS who had the RNY and about nine months out, she's lost 150 pounds. I'm going to the same surgeon and he told me that having PCOS won't affect my results. I honestly think, PCOS or not, it all depends on the person.
