Hello Ladys~

I was just wondering if any of you had luck getting pregnant after your WWL Surgery, and how long after surgery did you wait to start trying?!?!
I have not had surgery yet, but on the road to hopefully getting it in a few months
The reason i'm getting surgery is
1)i am over weight
2) i can't get pregnant because of PCOS, and my weight...I don't ovulate..we tryed Clomid, and we try Clomid and metphorman and nothing sadly...

Iv been Happly Married for 5 years and i'm wanting a family so bad
part of me feels like i broke because i can't give my husband a child, or my mother and father a grandbaby.....somedays are so hard....

Hope to hear back from all you get friends

Thanks:Teresa

Teresa,
I had the lap band in Feburary of 2004, in August of 2005 found out I was pregnant. I also suffer from PCOS, and was completely infertile due to it, and being over weight.  Depending on what type of WLS you are having there are limits to when you can start trying to get pregnant.
I wish you all the luck in the world...it will happen...just the weight loss alone helps so much with regulating your hormones to ease getting pregnant. Be sure you ask your doctor about when you can start trying to get pregnant...and good luck!!

most surgeons tell their patients to wait till they are about 18 months out from surgery to start trying to conceive. although some have gotten pregnant alot sooner than that  with few complications, it is just safer for both mom and baby to wait. please remember that, even though you have not yet been able to conceive, you need to use a reliable form of birth control until your weight stablizes so that you are giving you and your baby the best start possible.

Hi!
Thank you so much for the Info
Yes the last thing i would want to do is Harm myself or my baby...
I want to be Healthy, and want to know my body before i try anything dramatic!!
i actually have been thinking about some form of Birth Controll... Just have not figured out what type i want to go on........
I was kidna confused because my OBGYN Doctor told me it was safe for me to get pregnant 6-8months after my surgery...then my Surgen/Nurse said 12-18months after surgery...so i donot see myself getting pregnant for at least a year........
Thanks for the great info again

i love hearing for everyone

Lots of hugs

i am still pre-op but i feel like i have something to add to this.

i have pcos and also tried the clomid and metformin games. we tried birth control pills and a couple folk remedies and yes even some 'witchcraft'. lol i finally did get pregnant and had a beautiful baby who will be two the day after tomarrow, thank god. what ultimatly 'worked' was weight loss and prayer. the depression made me lay down and refuse to eat which caused the weight loss. the prayer removed some of the stress.

pcos doesnt prevent you from getting prgnant, it just makes it more difficult. the hormones and stuff get stored in the fat which sets the balance all off. losing the fat will help bring the balance back. from what i have read, you dont actually get cured but yeah it can be greatly reduced.

as for when to try again. i would definatly wait a year. your body will have undergone some serious physical changes and needs time to properly heal. this is inline with modern recomendations to not get pregnant for a year after delivery. also, getting pregnant will not allow you to keep the normal wls diet and will set you back. lastly but most importantly you need to remember the health of the baby. that first year, you are fighting to get the nutrution YOU need and cant really spare anything for the baby.

good luck and best wishes.

Hi there!

I am new to the boards also. I want to tell you that I'm in the same exact situation. I am married for 7 years now with no children. I have PCOS and have attempted clomid 5 times with no luck. I know that being overweight (morbidly obese) is a factor and although I could have gone onto IVF, I knew in my heart it was not the right thing to do with my weight so out of control. What is the point of getting pregnant when the risks of pregnancy due to obesity were so great?

So, I elected to have RNY and am happy to say that I had my surgery on 10/27/09. While the road will be long, I look forward to 12-18 months down the road when I can start actively trying. LIke you, I pray that the weight loss will reverse the affects of PCOS, with infertility being the first to go and we will conceive naturally when I get the green light.

Best wishes to you on your journey and know that your are not alone. I read posts out here and get inspired and filled with hope each day. Thanks to all of you who share your stories.

Like you, my reasoning for wanting WLS is because 1) I was having health problems secondary to obesity that a normal 32-year-old shouldn't be having (including PCOS), 2) because of the obesity, I was advised to not try to conceive until I lost weight due to the risks to both me and the fetus, and 3) I wanted nothing more than to be a mom.

PCOS is not just a reproductive issue, it is also a metabolic and endocrine disorder.  Weight loss can significantly relieve many of your PCOS symtpoms, but it doesn't necessarily guarantee they will go away.  There are many many normal weight (i.e. "thin") women who suffer from PCOS.

I am 18 months post RNY and trying to conceive.  I'll be starting on my first round of Clomid tomorrow.  I know that I ovulate occasionally, but because we're not sure that I ovulate every month, my fertility doc has decided to try Clomid and timed intercourse a few times before considering IUI.

There is a wonderful message board out there www.soulcysters.net specifically for PCOS.  I have found TONS of information about PCOS there and have learned things I didn't know already.  Go there and read read read.  They have TONS of articles posted.

I am a preop and not an expert on the subject by no means, but to the best of my understanding, if you have RNY (gastric bypass) or a DS (deodunal switch), you need to wait 18 months!!!

Also double up and be very careful about birth control after WLS because Ive heard that you become super fertile, and you want to make sure you wait your required time, and go on to have a healthy pregnancy and beautiful babes.

Good luck with your journey!!

We have been trying for 5 years, and I am obese, and also 40. I am preop, but I was told by the WLS doctor, that we could try to conceive 6-12 months after surgery.  My OB/GYN is who suggested WLS since there are so many risks trying while obese, and when it is time, we will be doing clomid/IUI cycles.  I only have one good tube left (lost a tube do to infection after csection with my 5 1/2 yr old.)
