Need some help- Have you experienced this?

I had Gastric Bypass on 5/7/09. Down 100lbs.

I have never had normal periods. Only one period my entire life on my own. Over three years since my last one.

Recently, my doc put me on a low dose BC to start to try and regulate me having some periods again. I have PCOS and prior to surgury was diagnosed with Sydrome X and Insulin Resistance.

I currently weigh 275.

So I started taking the low dose pills. I expected some break through bleeding but not this! About five days into taking the pills I started bleeding, not excessive but then a few days later and for about a week now it has been very very heavy. To the point that I have to change tampons every four hours and use Super Super tampons. I never used to have to wear a tampon over night and now I do. I'm worried because I never can remember flowing this bad, especially before I have even gone to the week without the hormones. This Sunday will start the placebo pills and I'm scared because if I'm bleeding this bad now what the heck is going to happen then.

I talked to my doctor and she said to just hang in there and let my body regulate itself. But I'm stressed out about this, I had been on birth control about 5 years ago and it was NEVER this bad. I'm worried because of the GBP and now the blood loss I'm experiencing...

Has anyone had similiar experiences? What did you do, what happened?

Thank you for listening and for your help!

Your body has been missing these hormones. If you haven't had a period in 3 years, you have a LARGE amount of tissue built up, and it is shedding. I go through this occasionally, when I skip a few cycles. I call my Dr if I skip more than 3...because I don't like bleeding for weeks on end.
Honestly, you might ask your dr about doing a D & C if it gets too bad. I'm really confused as to why he/she let you go so long without giving you provera to try to start it anyway or at least doing and ultrasound to make sure something else wasn't wrong.

Hi Jen I am also a PCOS patient who was very insulin resistent.  After surgery I started taking a low dose as well and may 2-21/2 weeks into it I got my period and it was heavy.  But before surgery I would maybe get 1 every 3 to 4 months, but it would be so heavy I would have to change my tampon every hour.  But my GYN said its because it is not regular.  Everything should be fine, I would give a week or two more and if it doesnt change then call your doctor.  Good Luck with everything Jenn from Baltimore,MD

Geesh! I would definately get this out of the way if it hasn't been for 3 years. Imagine the thickening of the lining in your uterus for 3 years not being shed. Hang in there. It will get normal once this gets out of your system. I would have to use provera every 3 months for 2 weeks to have a period before I got on BC pills. BC pills can be good at least you would know what week to expect your period once you get regulated.

Good luck sweetie. keep the heating pad close by. it helps

The ladies all answered as I would have but please know after RNY we do not absorb the pill as we did before so don't rely on it for birth control.
I was taken off the pill and tried the shot but I've been with the ring for almost a year now and I love it!! It keeps my cycle regular and is always back up birth control...condoms are first.

Also once I was below 175 pounds I no longer needed anything to keep my cycle regular it is like clockwork now.

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!
