IUD before kids?

Has anyone had an IUD placed before having any kids? I'm having to have one put in because of PCOS related bleeding problems and I'm curious because I haven't had kids yet.

Hey!  I went to get an IUD inserted because I was worried that even though I have PCOS that the surgery would dramatically increase my fertility and didn't want to get pregnant too early on.  I have no children and was told it was going to be really uncomfertable/ painful etc.  Well it was uncomfortable, alot of cramping, but I wouldn't say it was unbearable!  She had the ultrasound tec lady come in to make sure it was inserted in the right area, and it was not, and they could not get it in because it was causing me pain, felt like she was shoving it in there trying to get it past something that wasn't going to budge.  Anywho, I had/have a calcification in my cervix and it was just pushing it further in.  So I left uncomfertable WITHOUT the IUD. I balled.  Anyway, so I tried the Nuva Ring.  I quite liked it, but only used the samples that were given to me.  Then just stuck with condoms.  But anyway, hope that helped you out some!  Good luck!  Julia

The situation is odd, I'm having to have a D&C done because of heavy bleeding and other PCOS issues and my  Gyno explained to me that he'll go ahead and put the Merena IUD in while he's doing the D&C so it's not so complicated and painful for me. Maybe since I'll be knocked out it'll be easier.
It just happens that this is all happening before I have WLS! I was just curious because on all the ads for the IUD they say you should have had at least one kid already. My Dr knows I don't have kids and didn't mention anything about it.
Thanks for your reply!
both hubby and I are forgetful and I don't want to change getting pregnant to soon after surgery!

Yeah I had asked some questions on O.H. about getting the IUD and seems like if I am remembering correctly alot of women said thier Dr wont even go there if you have not had children.  Guess our Doc's are the few that will?  If you are going to be out of it, then you have no worries!!!!!

i had one put in last  year and I have never had kids.  I hurt like you wouldn't believe.  My doctor said it would be 5-10 seconds of cramping.  OH NO!!!!!!, it was more like 5-10 minutes of sheer agony.  My friend who got one a couple of months after me has a son 15 years ago and she said giving birth was less pain.

Now that I have completely scared you, I would do it again.  Now that it is in I do not have worry about anything for 5 years.  You will be in pain, but it is well worth it in my book.  I suggest taking a lot of ibuprofen (if you can) about 30 minutes prior.  They also say it is best to get it done while you are on your period (although a little gross) because you are more dialated.

Thanks

They were going to just put it in while they had me under during my D&C, but I had to have an emergency D&C on Monday and it wasn't my Dr it was his partner who did it and she wasn't prepared to insert the IUD during surgery! SO...that leaves me with the suffering through it.
I go back to my Gyno in two weeks for post op and he'll let me know then when he's going to put in the IUD!
