PCOS'er here - My period came on, by itself - 6weeks after surgery
This is the first period I have had this year. It was so unexpected, I didn't realize what was going on. Cramping and nausea, thought I had eaten something that didn't agree with me.

Good thing I was at home when it started, as it started hard and fast. I truely thought I was bleeding to death. Because by day three - I had to locate the thickest overnight pads made and I was wearing two of them at at time and soaking them within an hour.

Went to my OB, and she said if the meds she gave me does not slow it down by the next day, she was going to admit me to the hospital. Luckily, the meds worked - I am wondering if this is normal, has this happened to anyone else. Dr. says because I hadn't had a period in so long, the lining was thick and there was a lot to shed.

I am afraid this will happen everytime.

I am pre-op but this is something that I am fully expecting.
When your period is late due to PCOS or you skip a few months, the lining in the uterus gets thicker and thicker. Now that your body has started to regulate itself, it has ALOT of lining to get rid of, which is good because the thicker the lining gets, the more prone we are to getting all sorts of nasty things from it (cancer for one).
It probably will not happen every time, it will probably eventually work itself out. If your body decides that you're going to have heavy and painful periods (which happens sometimes with WLS patients) you can always invest in some sort of birth control like an iud. From what I've seen, they do help to regulate and lesson the period.
