I have PCOS with insulin resistance. I am almost 2 years post op and have only lost about 40 lbs. I have recently started a low carb diet and lost 8 more lbs. I am on 2,000 mg of Metformin a day and birth control. How many grams of carbs should i be taking in a day maxium. I need to make sure I'm doing this correctly and not eating too much. Any suggestions? I really want this lap band to work. I work out 3 times a week and I have almost 7 ccs of fluid in an 8 cc band! I don't understand why I can't loose weight.

When I was researching... my PCP and my surgeon both told me that the band wouldn't do much of anything for PCOS unless I really changed lifestyles.. that it wasnt taking away or fixing any of the hormone issues...

so I don't know what to tell you :(

Just keep everything no carb... if you're insulin resistant.. eating carbs will make you crave more carbs.. so make sure that when you're eating and getting full.. it's all proteins..

I too have PCOS & Insulin Resistance. I was also told Lapband would have minimal results with me and that RNY would give me much greater results. Was your surgeon aware that you had PCOS and IR?

yes she was aware but studies didn't show lap bands failure rate with pcos paitents until a little after my surgery.  Totally bummer.

I have RNY and still plagued with IR, sssssslllooooooowwww weight loss,  and ofcourse PCOS.  I m going to change my eating habits to reduce carbs even more...just going to stick with low GI carbs.  It is a struggle, but continue on in your journey...
best wishes...

I too have PCOS with insulin resitance.  I was banded in 2007 and lost about 40-60 lbs.  Then my band failed from slipping multiple times since I vomited with everything.

They took the band out and we did the sleeve.  2 weeks post op and 22 lbs down... I think this is the right decision.  I don't feel hunger.... I literally can't eat sugar without facing dumping syndrome.  With the band you have to really focus on self control and food choices....  that was something I wasn't very good at doing.

Keep working hard...

I am 2 weeks post op lapband. I did not have this info. Are there any further test to show the progression/regression of PCOS. I have been on YAZ for about a year and have done well. My periods have been consistant and not as heavy (before 2-3 pads at once). No more fatigue, sometimes my sugar drops drastically. What should I expect with pcos after the lapband surgery?

For me after I started losing weight when I was banded, I was taken off metformin because my blood sugars became controlled.  They watched this through my Hgb A1C.  My energy sky rocketed but that could easily be because of less weight!  My acne cleared up.  My pelvic pain from inflamed ovaries and cysts disappeared.  And my periods started again but still weren't regular.

Of course, after my band was deflated and I started gaining the weight back all my PCOS symptoms came back and were worse then before.  I am hoping with the sleeve my weightloss will be more permenant and I can kiss PCOS goodbye.  Well, for the most part anyway....

When I went though my low carb/caloric restriction diet, my nutritionist forbade more than 2 servings of carbs per day, although she insisted on 1/2 cup of legumes since the health benefits of beans outweighed their carb content.

One serving of starch is equivalent to:
a single slice of bread
1/4 cup of cooked rice

Your milage may vary, good luck!
