Hey all.  I have not had WLS yet, but am looking into my options.  Im from Ontario Canada, and would more then likely be going the RNY route.  My BMI is 39.5.

I had a total abdominal hysterectomy on February 10th this year...lost my cervix, uterus and one fallopian tube.  Still have my ovaries.  BTW, I am married and am 30 years old.  I was diagnosed with PCOS years ago.  I have been on and off metformin, am not on it currently.  I have much excess hair growth (espeically on the face), brown patches on the skin.

I would like to get the WLS done, Im wondering if there is anyone out there that can give me input on if it will help clear up any PCOS symptoms.  Bear in mind I dont get my period anymore since my TAH in Feb.  Any info would be appreciated..

I had my WLS towards the end of Jan and prior to that had some female issues. I had mild dysplasia and did the leep procedure also in Jan but it was the beginning of the month. Anyways I noticed that after my surgery I was starting to get a lot of facial hair and also the brown patches on my face. I blogged all my symptoms on this board and someone suggested that I could possibly have PCOS. I brought it to my OBGYN attention and he just prescribed birth control and said that should possibly help me with the excess testosterone. Anyways I just had my 3 month post op with my WLS and told him about it he said that with the actual weightloss that I am having those symptoms should clear up.
I am currently on metformin prescribed by my PCP which I was told would regulate my insulin resistance brought by the PCOS which caused my stall that I was in for about 2 months. I have been taking metformin for about a month and have lost another 12 pounds. So the metformin has helped with my insulin resistance. Which causes stalls for people with PCOS. As for my symptoms I still have the facial hair and the blotchy skin. But I only have one little spot on my face no additional blotches so thats a good sign. As for the facial hair and excess hair everywhere else. I think what is causing mine right now is the fact that I am taking biotin which helps with hair growth. Since my surgery I have been losing a lot of hair and someone suggested using  biotin for regrowth. The only problem is you don't get to pick and choose where it goes. But I do think that with time and weight loss the issues of PCOS do go away. One question in regards to your TAH if you don't mind.
I have actually suggested to my OBGYN about having one since I have been having alot of female issues (PCOS, mild dysplasia,) now being so young and having this done do you notice a change in your body, yourself. I am 31 and don't want to keep going through these issues and have it turn into cancer. Since my mother was diagnosed and also had a TAH a few years ago. But people think I am crazy for even suggesting it to my doctor because of the issues I will have afterwards with hormones and other stuff. I would just like to get some input from someone who's my age and could give me details to whether or not its the right thing for me. I would appreciate any information you could give.

Hi there,
I also have PCOS with endometriosis.  I had a total hysterectomy in 2006, and had gastric by-pass surgery in 2007.  I did not have facial hair or brown patches, and I did take metformin for a short while.  The hysterectomy seem to clear up my pain, although I think it was mostly from the ovarian cysts cause by the pcos.  My WLS went off without any incidents.  I take lots of calcium as a precaution because I am also young.  I am from ontario, and had my surgery with Dr O'Malley in Rochester.  Good luck to you!

I don't know that I have alot of answers. I have had the lap band and am in the process of revision to RNY. I had PCOS and Endo when my hyst was done at 32. (9 years ago.) I have been told that PCOS never truly goes away even after a hyst. I sometimes still have pain, skin tags, weight problems. OK now I am rambling. I don't know if this helped or not. Good Luck and keep sharing if you find any more information. BTW I have heard that RNY is a good surgery for PCOS'er because it effects the hormones. Has anyone else heard this?
