Which WLS is best for women with PCOS ?

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the board and I am still debating which surgery is right for me. I started out RNY and now I’ve switched to DS. I am wondering now since I have PCOS if DS is the WLS that will help decrease a lot of my symptoms like missed periods, acne, dark patches, fertility and of course weight loss. Please advise if you see more success with RNY or DS.
Thanks

I've had good results with the RNY.  All of my PCOS symptoms went away except for the facial hair.  I no longer have the AN, IR, Diabetes, skin tags, infertility...all those are gone.  I've been able to have 2 perfectly healthy pregnancies post op after 8+ years of infertility treatments.  I'm very happy with my RNY.

When it comes to the symptoms of PCOS going away...it's not really the type of surgery that's been done...it's the overall weight loss that resolves symptoms.

Good luck in your decision and if you have more RNY questions I'd be happy to answer!

Hi I hope this helps. I had my RNY on 02/02/2009. I have had PCOS for nearly three years before my surgery. The week after my surgery they took me off my Metformin. I got my period in March and April for a normal 5 days and it has been wonderful. I do not know what you need to loose, but I needed to loose 120, that is why I chose the RNY.

I had the RNY 5 weeks ago. I have been having symptoms of PCOS for 15 years now. After losing 42 lbs I got my period on my own without even using birth control. I think that's the surgery that will work the best.

I haven't had my surgery yet but am approved for the DS (waiting for the h pylori to clear up before the date can be set).  Even though I'm considered a 'light weight' I chose the DS specifically because of the lifelong malabsorption that comes with it: the fat malabsorption, the changes in how our bodies deal with insulin and the metabolism boost all from the switch part of the surgery.  For me, food restriction has never been the issue, so these three factors swayed me in that direction....and also because they are life long and (I might be wrong about this) but my understanding is that you eventually adapt to the RNY malabsorption (RNYers please correct me if this is wrong).

I've been overweight my entire life and only able to lose about 20 to 30lbs at a time and never able to maintain.  After heavily researching the surgeries - the DS made the most sense.  However, I think you could make any choice that is right for you and your body and have success.

good luck

I had the lap band, lost 80 lbs got my PCOS and IR completely under control, and I have very severe PCOS. My periods came back regular once I lost about 50 lbs, and I even got pregnant by accident (after undergoing years of ferlitiy treatments to get pregnant in the past).

Wow!!  I love hearing stories like yours!! Congrats!! Were your triplets the accidental pregnancy? Or were they in addition? I keep wondering if I will have to undergo fertility treatments a couple of years after I have my DS. Kudos to you!

Hi, my triplets where a blessing given to me by medical science LOL We did two years worth of fertility treatments in order to be able to have them, they are now almost 7 years old. The current "opps" is still cooking, I am 18 weeks preggo, when I got down around 50 lbs my period started coming back pretty normal (28 to 30 days) which I had honestly never had in my life.  I was shocked when that pregnancy test came back positive after all we had been though! I think you will be shocked at the changes your body will go though after your DS, you truly become a whole new person! Good luck with everything.
