Possible Risk factor of PCOS -not well known
I was diagnosed MANY years ago with PCOS. Long story sort of short: My Daughter was also diagnosed at age 13. She had minor surgery on her legs (healthy athletic 16 year old) and had a pulmonary embolus (blood clot) 2 weeks later that took her from us.
I went to an endocrinologist about 6 months after her death because we wanted to try for a baby ( Kendal had also been a fertility baby). Anyway, this guy had done ALOT of research and specialized in PCOS. There are studies out there that show (research done in the last 10-15 years) there are abou 14 clotting disorders related to PCOS.
Bottom line, Please make sure that your Drs. are aware of this prior to ANY type of surgery so that precautions can be taken and you can be watched more closely. I actually tested negative for these clotting disorders, but we will never know if Kendal did or not.
JUST FYI. Some do not believe this research, it is up to you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine your pain.
You make a very good point. I always feel kinda like the red-headed stepchild with this PCOS stuff. Most doctors can treat the symptoms individually but so few people really know what to do with it. With more and more research, hopefully we can all get the care that we need.
thanks for sharing your story with us.

I am so sorry for the loss of your precious daughter. Thank you for spreading the word on clotting disorders and PCOS. I know a couple women with PCOS who had pregnancy losses before they were dx'd with and treated for clotting disorders. I had no idea it could cause extra risk after surgery, however.
Thank you. I do not think it is well known by many people at all. And because it takes research on these things so long to become accepted fact in the general healthcare world....
I can only hope that sharing our experience at least some will be fore warned! We have already had my 3 year old daughter tested for ANY clotting disorders, but as she gets older, if she shows any signs of PCOS (which unfortunately she probably will) we will have her tested again.
Thanks for helping to spread the word!
