Nuvaring vs. the pill

My doctor's office recommends his female patients use Nuvaring to help regulate periods after WLS. I was on the Depo shot for 10 years and because I have PCOS, I'm very reluctant to take anything other than the pill (low dose even because of possible mental side effects - I also take antidepressants. I know, I'm a mess!). To be honest I really didn't even want to take the pill, but I wasn't having ovulating or having normal periods before I started taking it.

Does anyone know the hormonal/chemical differences between a birth control pill like Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo and Nuvaring? Much appreciated!

Failure is not an option!

I do not know the hormonal differences, I just know that I LOVE MY NUVARING!!! I love not having to take a pill every day. It's awesome!

I was in the same boat...could not take the pill due to depression issues.  So my GYN prescribed a progesterone pill called Aygestin.  I would take that for 10 days, then within 3 days I would get my period.  I would take that every 3 months.  My doc said you only need to really have it every 2-3 months to shed the lining of your uterus.  You might want to check with your doc about that med. I mentioned.  She also gave me the Nuvaring and I had depression with it.
But everyone is different.  The Aygestin worked well.

I didn't have success having a period with the ring.  I did it for three months after being off depo for six months....no luck.  I finally had Fenton FE pill to get me started (after trying other pills).  What has helped me maintain having a period without the pill is taking Metformin (regular, not extended release).  Now after not having a period for five year (depo shot) and prior to that only with ortho...I have had one three months in a row with just metformin.  The only thing I will mention, my hormones have been crazier that ever before.  After being regulated for so long on some form of BC; it's been hard to adjust to mood swings, etc.

Good luck! Stacey

I had no luck with the nuvaring for embarassing reasons I posted in another thread a while back. Anyway I currently am doing the aygestin (SP?) type method, doesn't work for birth control, but gives you a period. I also have the mental issues with hormones so it's hard for me to find a pill that works. I also get sick easily from the hormones so if it's too strong I puke. :-P

i have to say that i LOVE the nuva ring....i have NO "crazy" symptoms..i tried 4 different pills then gave up on BC for years because i became SO moody, it was completely unpredictable with the pill "any pill" horrible....i mean, Laugh@ people while they cry horrible! cry during commercials horrible!!! nuva ring took some getting use to thats for sure...getting it out was kind of hard the first time...but once you learn to "relax" down there while trying to remove it, its fine!
and did i mention NO symptoms...im sure its diff for everyone, but i definitely think its worth a shot.
good luck !
