hello. i suffer from insulin resistance, aswell as possible PCOS and a horrible case of acanthosis nigricans. i'm VERY curious if there's anybody out there who has/had these issues and what happened with them after any surgery they may have had. i hope to generate some responses as it seems these conditions will never resolve and it's getting hopeless for me, and i haven't had my rny yet. please help?

Your RNY thingie states that your surgery was to be 8/29/08 did it get postponed?

Anyway I too had IR as well as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, severe sleep apnea, infertility, acanthosis nigricans & hirsutism.  Once I had my RNY and the weight came off all of my PCOS symptoms went away with the exception of the hirsutism.  Unfortunately once hair like that grows in it'll always be there unless I do the laser hair removal.

The acanthosis nigricans got MUCH better and now I only have just a touch of discoloration in the groin area.  As for the IR it's gone.  So is my diabetes.  I stopped taking Metformin the day before surgery and haven't needed to go back on it.  My A1C is normal as are my fasting insulin & glucose levels.  With the weight loss came a regulation in my hormones as well and after going through 8 years of failed fertility treatments was able to get pregnant 2x after surgery!  Both times were on the 1st month trying.

Having my RNY surgery 'cured' me of my diabetes, IR, acanthosis nigricans, sleep apnea & infertility.  Unfortunately for me my high blood pressure did return but it's VERY easily controlled now.  The hirsutism (facial hair) is still there, but although it didn't go away it did stop getting worse.

Good luck getting your surgery done and with gaining control over your IR & PCOS!

No problem.  AN sucks...I always felt like I was just dirty because that's what it reminded me of...dirt!  Anyway I hope you get your date soon!

My AN got SOOO much better!  My periods normalized and a lot of my PCOS symptoms went away.  Insulin resistence, a part of PCOS, is not so much of an issue becuase as part of the post surgery behavior, we have to avaiod foods that trigger insulin production (carbs, sugar).  PCOS will not go away, but its symptoms can lessen significantly with weight loss.  Good luck with getting your surgery rescheduled.

I've already had my WLS (RNY), but like the OP I still had the same questoins. I am really encouraged to hear about the symtoms lessening and going away. I am getting laser hair removal to make that awful hair go away and I feel like because I am finally losing weight for real that the hormone problems that would otherwise make the hair grow back (as well as cause all those other lovely symptoms of PCOS) are beginning to get under control.

One question that I do have --- my internist suggested that I no resume BCPs so I can see how I do on my w/ my cycles. I am going to check with my PCOS doctor to see what he thinks. I am all for NOT being on yet another medication, but I am hesitant only because I know that the BCP I've been prescribed (Zovia) is supposed to  be really helpful when it comes to counteracting androgen levels and thus helping with the hirsutism and acne.

I'm also not taking metformin, and my NUT said met would probably be overkill since I'm eating so little these days.
