Metformin after surgery

Did anyone take Metformin after surgery? I am just over a year out and according to my blood tests I am still insulin resistant.

Because we're trying to have a kid, my RE wants me to start on Met again.  I'm a little nervous because of the pill size.. but just checking if anyone else has any experience with this.  :-)

I went off Met right after surgery because it sometimes made me nauseous and my surgeon and endo both didn't want the chance of me vomiting. Three months after surgery, my endo wanted me back on Met. I tried it for two months and just couldn't do it. Either I couldn't keep the pill down or it made me nauseous and sick. I just gave up.

No I was taken off the day before surgery and haven't touched one since.
Have you thought of seeking a second opinion before going back on Metformin.
According to the studies I've seen once our guts are bypassed there is no need for any diabetes medications.

201 pounds lost since surgery!! And I'm 2 1/2 inches taller too!!

And YES I still eat Carbs and Fats but I know what portion control is!!

That's usually the case if everything resolves itself... I'm unfortunately still insulin resistant and it's causing problems with ovulation.

There are a lot of hormonal changes with RNY, but PCOS is a chronic condition and is not "cured" by surgery. So regaurdless of if you want to become pregnant or not, IR can lead to Type to diabetes. PCOS patients are 3 times more likely to have diabetes and heart disease than just an obese person. For that reason alone, I have stayed on my metformin (I'm just 1 month out). I take 500mg twice daily, and they're not very big tablets. You can also halve or quarter them if you wanted. They do cause GI upset, pre op I had nausea with them, now they give me diarrhea (sorry, I know that's graphic) but totally worth it to prevent diabetes and heart disease.

I think there is a liquid form of metformin. You may want to research that option.

I was taken off metformin right away, but like someone else posted on another thread, my appetite came back with a vengence.

I know with the metformin that I could get my appetite under control, so my endo put me back on it.  She does NOT want me gaining the weight back, so she was more than willing to do it.  I have no trouble with the pills and they are big.  In fact I swallow them all at once.   Now they do make me feel a bit gross for a while, but I try to make sure there is something in my pouch when I take them.

it does seem to help with the appetite.  I just wi**** would help with the metabolism.  I am damn angry that i can't get the last 14 pounds off.  I have tried everything.

Oh well that is another post.

I stayed on Metformin after my RNY but the MD cut the dose in half.  I read a study that some cases of PCOS resolve after the weight loss but some do not.  I couldn't stand the taste of the crushed Metformin so my MD prescribed Riomet which is the liquid Metformin.  It still doesn't taste great but is much better than the crushed pills.  I'm 9 months out and am still taking 5 ml per day (500 mg per day) and find that to be ok.  My A1C number is great but I still haven't done a fasting insulin level.  I'm concerned to come off the Metformin because I don't want to slow my weight loss or gain any weight back.  I'll keep checking in with my MD though and see what she says.

Good luck and try the Riomet!
