Vonetta,

How did they determine that you don't have cysts? Did you have an ultrasound and not to be personal but did you have a transvaginal ultrasound.  I have read several books and articles on PCOS and I am fairly certain that you usually have cysts but I don't think always.  I also know that just a regular ultrasound does not cut it.  As much as a pain in the but it is to have a transvaginal ultrasound that is the best way to visualize the ovaries.  Have you had hormone levels drawn?  Are you seeing a specialist?  I have seen an endocrinologist in the past and was the happiest with their treatment for PCOS as they deal with hormone issues.  Some OB/GYN also do but very few actually treat symptoms and want to become involved in the treatment of PCOS. Good luck let me know if you have any more questions I'd be happy to converse with you. I have been
dx with PCOS for about 15 years now.

I have been dealing with PCOS for many years, and it took quite a while to get the appropriate medical care. I would say that most primary care providers do not really understand PCOS. They think that they do, but they really have no clue. A reproductive endocrinologist is an excellent specialist to see.

As far as cysts go, the answer is yes, you can have PCOS without the cysts. Ovarian cysts are just one possible symptom that some women with PCOS may have. In other words, having ovarian cysts absolutely does not mean that you have PCOS. And having no cysts (like myself) does not rule out PCOS.

I think that WLS is a great tool to help us get our weight under control. But I don't believe that PCOS is ever cured. PCOS is a metabolic condition that starts with insulin resistence, and the best that we can do is to control it for as long as we can.

Alot of time the cysts are gone before they can be seen. Your levels go up and down. Please see an endocrinologist. They are best equipped for handling this. Also start taking b6 and b12 as it will help regulate your cycle. You can also start by eating complex carbs and eliminating simple ones. Your cycles would return to normal with even minor weight loss. I understand about the beard thing. I have even had laser hair removal. It helped some but its still there. I still have to shave everyday. I will not be seen with facial hair.
Sugar busters and South Beach diet are great plans for those with PCO.
I had major bloodwork with my Endo. There are certain tests they run with PCO. I had like 3 pages worth.  I never had that before. Good luck and please find an Endo. You will be happier and there are now cremes for the facial hair and medication which I am going to look into.

I was diagnosed based on my other symptoms 20 years ago.  I thought the dr. was crazy, because he did not check with ultrasound.  But, 15 years later I started with the cysts and it was awful.  I must say that I have had a great dr who has tried different medications at my request.  Find a dr. that you trust, and talk over your concerns. These issues are hard to discuss so take some time and find someone you can trust who is willing to try different treatments.  They say losing weight will help and I will have to see myself as I am pre-op.  All the best, hope this helps.
