Did anyone else only develope symptoms of PCOS after taking the birth control Depo-Provera?  I was the most normal female until after I was on the SHOT! My weight was managable..I had a very regular cycle..and I had very little facial hair that everyone in my family has. I know that doctors won't say it was the Depo but I really want to know if I'm the only one out there who had this happen to them.

It happened to me in in 1999. I gained 155 lbs in 7 months.   I didnt have regular periods and  since I was bleeding to much, they thought it would stop the bleeding instead of regular birth control pills. Ass*oles. I am so fat now. I was unable to get down to my original 160 lbs.   My advice is never to take it again. I just recently as of last year started to take birth control pills and I am regular with less PCOS symptoms. I dont listen to doctors anymore.   I am going for RNY and hopefully my PCOS will get better.

Yup!  I have suspicions that my PCOS is related to the Depo - but my DH is absolutely convinced that's what it's from!  I was always overweight, but after I took Depo-Provera for a year and a half, it got out of control, literally.  Nothing I did helped with the weight after that, not to mention all of the other wonderful PCOS symptoms!

You're not alone.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one this has happened too.

I will tell you my story with Depo. I have always been slightly over weight and never really had regular periods and never had excess facial hair. Well in 1998 I had a 2 month period, which turned into bleeding like a stuffed pig. I passed out and ended up in the hospital for 3 days. I had to have 3 pints of blood because I had lost so many red blood cells. The doctor decided I should have Depo to KEEP me from bleeding, at all, no period. I ended up in his office every 6 weeks for a Depo shot, this is the shot that should only be every 3 months!! I did this for about 6 months and I gained probably 80 pounds in that time frame. I moved away and didnt have a gyno, so the Depo slowly got out of my body. Six years later I had my first period after the shots and again it was ongoing and very heavy. I didnt end up in the hospital that time, I just got put on birth control to help make it more regular. Did'nt work. Now 10 years later I can grow a thicker beard than my BF, I have to shave ( I know I shouldnt shave my face) every day or I look like I have 5 o'clock shadow. I havent had a period in over 2 years that wasnt provera induced and now I have been on BCP for 6 months and havent had a period. I was finally diagnosed with PCOS in October of last year , just because I told my doctor that is what I have.He ran tests and told me you are right. Lovely I go to the Univerisity of Iowa hospital for all of my healthcare and I had to tell them what was wrong. I finally got put on Metformin, that has at least helped with the weight loss, I have lost 40 pounds fairly easily since. But yeah.. I am 100% sure that the Depo caused this nightmare for me. I will probably never be able to have children even after I lose the weight, just because some stupid OB/GYN thought he was god 10 years ago.

I've gone years without my period also..but now I have been spotting for 4 months. The Metformin didn't work for me in any way. I didn't have any weight loss or regular periods. Everyone I have talked to says that I needed to take a higher dose (I only took 500mg daily) but i couldn't get a doctor to give it to me. I have tricare insurance (military) and the doctors here at the military hospital don't seem to care about what you really want or need. You hardly ever see the same doctor more than once. I finally started requesting the same doctor and refusing to see anyone else and he is a civilian so now after 2 years of fighting for some help I am getting it. I still can't get anyone to believe that it was the depo that caused it all. They seem to think I am lying about my life before the shot.

I think Depo is a drug made by the Devil himself.  I was normal until I had my first Depo shot.  After 1 year on depo, i gained 100 lbs and and became infertile.  All the classic PCOS symptoms started popping up.  Once I researched online and found out what poison depo is, I stopped taking it.  It took nearly 4 years and the help of a reproductive endocrinologist to diagnose me with PCOS and help me get pregnant.

I personally believe Depo should be taken off the market.

BTW, those 100 lbs never would come off.  So, I had weight loss surgery in January of this year and it has been amazing.

This is an interesting theory! I was on Depo for 3 years, and I LOVED it, before I was on it, I had horribly painful, irregular periods. Well, obviously being on it, it was awesome to not have any periods (I was like 16 years old) I didn't have any crazy weight gain, but I was EXTREMELY athletic, at  one point I even lost 30lbs (I was running 10 miles a day and severely restricting my calories). Well, I went off the depo thinking I would like to get pregnant in the next few years... 2 years passed, no period, 3 years passed, no period, and I gained 60 lbs back. That's when we investigated the PCOS... so I have mixed feelings about it this theory, but it is still interesting none the less!
